Excerpt from the preface "To prepare the Encyclopedia, the MBC chose Dr. Horace Newcomb, Heyne Professor of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin as curator and editor. Professor Newcomb, one of the first scholars to examine the content and history of television...assembled an advisory committee [to reduce] the vast array of possible "television topics" to around 1,000. An early decision was made to focus the majority of the work on major English-speaking, television producing countries, and for that reason the bulk of the material presented here deals with television programs, people, and topics drawn from the United States, Britain, Canada and Australia... It happens every single summer. I can't say no. You see, I always start off with these grand plans to take time off for myself in order to revisit some of my favorite places in California. Places I'd like to enjoy at a more leisurely, relaxed pace. And I always tell everyone at the office that this time around I really mean it, and I really am going to block off a big chunk of my summer calendar just for me! And then it starts happening. We get invitations to attend this or that festival or visit this or that natural or historic place and I get to thinking what a great story it would make. And presto—once again my summer calendar is filled up with shooting episodes for TV. For example, this August was filled with adventures—a Road Trip to Encinitas, a day at the Reagan Ranch in Santa Barbara County and a kayaking adventure inside the sea caves of Santa Cruz Island for California's Gold, a visit to the newly-restored Leland Stanford Mansion in Sacramento for California's Golden Parks, lunch at the Homegirl Café in East LA for Visiting... and a day diving off our coast studying ocean reefs for California’s Green. All of these spaced so that I never had more than two or three days in between for my much touted "time off." But you know what? My vacations, if they ever occur, can come later.
