The Land Surveying Programme, formerly Department of Surveying and Mapping, was established by the late Professor Harry Biesheuvel in 1948 soon after the end of the Second World War, catering at first for soldiers who had served in the Survey Battalion. The model used for the newly established Department then was similar to that used for the University of Cape Town department established in 1926.
Land Surveying is placed in the Faculty of Engineering and students shared the same mathematics, applied maths and physics courses taken by the Engineers. Like the Department at the University of Cape Town , the Land Survey Programme has out lived a diploma course at Rhodes university as well as similar programmes at universities of the Witwatersrand, Pretoria and Fort Hare. The fortunes of the programme are revealed by the graph below showing graduate numbers.

S ince the early 1920s, Tinklepaugh Suveying has completed more than 100,000 surveys while building a tradition for accuracy and quality. Our survey records have grown through the years from original hand-drawn record plats by H.M. Tinklepaugh to an unmatched database containing thousands of notes, surveys and plats throughout Central Florida. T oday, that tradition continues with experience and knowledge gained from its history combined with state-of-the-art surveying equipment directly linked to computer aided design and drafting systems. At Tinklepaugh, highly experienced registered professional land surveyors direct teams of field crews dispatched in a modern fleet of all-terrain vehicles. Whether for right-of-way, utility mapping, locating boundaries, or construction staking, the Tinklepaugh crews utilize the most current equipment and technology. A great many things have changed since H.M. Tinklepaugh surveyed Central Florida more than 80 years ago. What has not changed is Tinklepaugh Surveying's commitment to accuracy, dependability and cost consciousness.

Karlsruhe
The Auriga project
Computer Aided Cave Surveying
The Auriga project is about developing an electronic surveying tool to make cave surveying easier and less error-prone. Currently, the standard process is to measure heading and tilt with a sighting compass and clino, write the data down on some waterproof paper and enter the data into a surveying program at home.
There is lots of room for improvements here. The signting instruments are difficult to use in low light conditions and narrow passages. Writing the data down and reading them at home from a mud-smeared paper also introduces the possibility of mis-readings.
Auriga addresses all these problems:
  • inclination and heading measurements are made with an electronic sensor array data is stored electronically and can be checked still in the cave data can be exported to the surveying program at home
Hardware
I experimented for several years with various sensors and processor boards before I finally came up with this design:
  • Data processing, storage, visualisation and user interface: PalmPilot (I have an old PalmPilot Personal)
