The New C++: Trip Report, October 2002
Herb Sutter
First, a Word from Our Technical Corrigendum
Since 1998, the C++ Standards committee has spent most of its time processing queries and potential minor bug fixes to the existing Standard. In my writing, I've sometimes referred to a few of the more notable bug fixes; for example, in Item 7 of More Exceptional C++ , I mentioned that we were adding the requirement that a std::vector
's internal storage be contiguous, so that a programmer can take a pointer to some element inside a vector and safely do pointer arithmetic to traverse the vector's contained elements just like an array. I've also mentioned that the first batch of these are being published as Technical Corrigendum 1 (a.k.a. "TC1"; think of it as "service pack 1") to the C++ Standard. In the meantime, I'd like to remind everyone of some long-standing good news: you don't have to wait for ISO to issue new documents to stay up to date on the committee's work (and you can be sure that your compiler vendor doesn't wait that long). You can always get an up-to-date list of all issues and their status right from the ISO C++ committee's website at

Are copycat ads always bad? (28 July 2005) In the last six months, a number of ads have elicited complaints to the ASA that children might mimic the behaviour shown. With some complaints upheld and others rejected, this public concern has put the spotlight on the ASA's stance regarding emulation in advertising.

83. The Jorne Project
An opensource project to create standards for combining RDF content and parseable Lojban text.

Lead developer: Brian Eubanks
The Jorne Project
A n open-source project that develops standards and software for connecting Lojban with the Semantic Web.
What is Lojban? Lojban is an artificial spoken and written language based on predicate logic. It was designed as a human language, but is easily processed by computers due to its unambiguous syntax. You can find a complete description of the language on the Lojban web site . There is also an active Lojban discussion group . In Lojban, the word "jorne" is the predicate that describes the process of "joining" or "unifying".
What is the Semantic Web? The Semantic Web is the next-generation web, a web where links are made between concepts, rather than documents. The main standard that defines these links is called the Resource Description Framework (RDF). (See the Wikipedia definition for more information).
Why Lojban for the Semantic Web? Lojban has unambiguous grammar, expressive and well-structured semantics, a large and growing community of users, and a predicate structure that maps very easily onto RDF. Once there are standards for integrating existing RDF ontologies with Lojban text, then anyone can write a Lojban description of something, and automatically generate an RDF document readable by programs on the Semantic Web. This knowledge could then be immediately integrated into the rest of the Semantic Web. Some examples of potential usage:
  • Include parseable Lojban inside RDF files

85. ANSI-ISO PASCAL
The official ANSI and ISO standards, as well as the proposed standard for objectoriented Pascal. Also includes a list of compliant compilers.

ANSI-ISO STANDARD PASCAL INFORMATION PAGE This page contains various information about the standard versions of Pascal as stated by the ISO and ANSI organizations (other standards organizations also exist). Also below are several references to other sites of interest to standard Pascal in one form or another.
WHY ANSI/ISO STANDARD PASCAL ? The ANSI and ISO Pascal standards are unique in that they did not seek to remake the existing Pascal language as defined by Niklaus Wirth. Instead, they simply defined Wirth's Pascal in a more formal form, and eliminated the abiguities of the original language. The first ANSI and ISO standards essentially ARE the original language. Pascal has been subsetted, modified and worse. But in it's original form, Pascal may be the most carefully constructed, documented and standardized language in existence. Pascal is, unfortunately, very much a "great improvement on it's successors", and continues to be usefull for all programming work. Available compilers: Here is your guide to full ISO/ANSI compilers that are current and SUPPORTED. The ANSI-ISO Pascal FAQ Rules of ANSI-ISO 7185 Pascal, text document

Tortoise
Standards

(Thrill Jockey) After almost a 3-year break between recordings, nearly anything that Tortoise released would find it difficult to stand up to the expectations that people have for it. Perhaps one of the best ways for the group to throw everyone off, then, is by doing just what they've done with the aptly titled Standards. Instead of going off and changing their sound too drastically, and without going back to anything that they've done before, they instead work a middle ground with the disc, taking the excellent familiar parts of their sound and incorporating some new things for a release that's new and familiar at the same time. With the exception of one or two songs on the release, you can listen and hear the group Tortoise performing the songs. That might sounds like sort of a silly thing to say, but after TNT a couple years back now, some people may have been expecting them to take yet another about-face and again end up somewhere in left field. Instead, they've arrived at a nicely composed mid-ground, and have managed to harness much more energy than they did on their previous release. Within the first two minutes of "Seneca," one may think that it's a different group alltogether. After a blast of dusty electric guitar and fuzzed-out crazy drumming, the track eventually settles into one of the best grooves on the disc. The track winds down into some strange electronic sounds (including samples of a person yelping) before drifting right into the second track of "Eros" on which the group explores some very interesting (and almost trademark for them) layered percussion while a flatulent sounding keyboard spits out some weird little gurgles over it all.

Because of the longer coat the Balinese appears to have softer lines and less extreme type than other breeds of cats with similar type. HEAD: long, tapering wedge. Medium size in good proportion to body. The total wedge starts at the nose and flares out in straight lines to the tips of the ears forming a triangle, with no break at the whiskers. No less than the width of an eye between the eyes. When the whiskers and face hair are smoothed back, the underlying bone structure is apparent. Allowance must be made for jowls in the stud cat.

        Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) Initiative
Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) is a set of management and Internet standard technologies developed to unify the management of distributed computing environments. WBEM provides the ability for the industry to deliver a well-integrated set of standard-based management tools, facilitating the exchange of data across otherwise disparate technologies and platforms. The DMTF has developed a core set of standards that make up WBEM, which includes: The Common Information Model (CIM) standard CIM standard Web page. CIM-XML WBEM Discovery using Service Location Protocol (SLP) and WBEM Universal Resource Identifier (URI) mapping CIM Query Language - a query language used to extract data from a CIM-based management infrastructure. In addition, the DMTF has developed a WBEM Management Profile template, allowing for simplified profile development to deliver a complete, standalone definition for the management of a particular system, subsystem, service or other entity.
