Most people don't want to think or talk about sewage until it's a problem. I can't say I blame them. But if your city, your commercial property, or your residence has a sewer problem, you don't have to live with it. I hope instead you will come to me for a solution and a plan to ensure you won't have a sewer problem in the future.
Sincerely,
Arthur A. Schrage

GREY WATER SYSTEMS
by Valentine A. Lehr
Lehr Associates
Reprinted from the 1986 E.J. Zimmer Refresher Course
Introduction
Grey water systems refer to dual water supply systems which permit the reuse of "grey" wastes from lavatories, bathtubs, showers and other fixtures discharging dilute non-fecal wastes or of fully treated sewage effluent, as a secondary, non-potable water source.
These systems accomplish significant levels of water conservation by utilizing water resources in a more efficient manner. As an additional benefit, grey water systems also reduce sewage loads and ease the impact on sewage treatment facilities.
With the current worldwide concerns over increasing levels of water consumption and lack of adequate supplies, grey water technology has enjoyed increased popularity as a viable alternate to merely reducing water usage. This approach offers means for combatting water shortage, the ultimate Achilles Heel of many developing areas.
Grey Water Systems The first use of grey water systems were in water scarce areas where the sheer lack of adequate supplies mandates one means of conservation. This was easily achieved by simply collecting the relatively clean waste from lavatories, bathtubs, showers, laundry fixtures and equipment and reusing the liquid as the source of supply for water closets and urinals. In the original applications there was little or no treatment of grey water waste prior to reuse, the only improvement of the water quality coming from some settling achieved in the grey water storage tank prior to its redistribution.

Water Distribution involves the ongoing maintenance, repair and replacement of water lines, meters, valves, fire hydrants, pump stations and storage facilities. The water received by customers in the county’s service area, is supplied by the City of Dayton under normal conditions. The county maintains its wells in a "readiness to serve" status for emergency and extended drought situations. During 1996 construction continued on $34 million of water system capital improvements. The water supply quality is continuously studied using very sophisticated analytical equipment to insure its purity.
