Is your safety programme costing more than it needs to?
Our proven approach shows that the system is acceptably safe while minimising certification effort.
We integrate all aspects of the safety lifecycle including safety management and engineering to principle. We present the evidence gathered throughout the process to support certification. We continually research ways to improve and extend our approach and apply it to new technologies.
We design and develop safety management systems:
Our risk-based approach to safety engineering combines applied research with practical experience (including HAZOPS, FFA, FTA, ETA, FMEA). Being design-centred ensures we focus on what is needed for a specific project.

Controlling process hazards is a continuing programme in GlaxoSmithKline with a goal of minimising risk through the use of expert engineering design and good manufacturing processes. Many products begin with the formulation and processing of hazardous materials such as flammable solvents and combustible powders. Through Green Chemistry and Green Technology programmes scientists look for opportunities to eliminate the use of these hazardous materials Where this substitution is not feasible our Process Safety Programme ensures that safety is built into the process. GlaxoSmithKline EHS Standards require all hazardous operations to complete Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) studies that include the identification of hazards, the evaluation of risk and the development and implementation of corrective action where needed. The Process Safety Programme is a continuing management system that is in place for the life cycle of every process ensuring that the highest level of safety is maintained as the process is operated, refined and finally decommissioned.

Career, Job and Employment Information
Industrial, Health and Safety Engineering Career Overview
Industrial engineers determine the most effective ways to use the basic factors of production—people, machines, materials, information, and energy—to make a product or to provide a service. They are the bridge between management goals and operational performance. They are more concerned with increasing productivity through the management of people, methods of business organization, and technology than are engineers in other specialties, who generally work more with products or processes. Although most industrial engineers work in manufacturing industries, they may also work in consulting services, healthcare, and communications.
The work of health and safety engineers is similar to that of industrial engineers in that it deals with the entire production process. Health and safety engineers promote worksite or product safety and health by applying knowledge of industrial processes, as well as mechanical, chemical, and psychological principles. They must be able to anticipate, recognize, and evaluate hazardous conditions as well as develop hazard control methods. They also must be familiar with the application of health and safety regulations.
In 2002, industrial, health and safety engineers were employed in around 194,000 jobs. The manufacturing industries hired six out of ten of these engineers, while professional, scientific, and technical services firms employed an additional one in ten engineers as consultants. These engineers are more widely spread among the industrial sector than other engineers because they possess universal skills.

Abstract:
Much of the world is engaged in the transition from prescriptive codes to performance-based codes for the regulation of safety in the built environment. The motivation for these changes is the concept that sensible regulations lead to improved flexibility of design and lower costs for no reduction in safety. In such a construction climate it is easier to attract international business development with its attendant jobs and growth of the tax base, especially in these times of the global marketplace. This paper presents a vision of the futuer development of HAZARD I and its primary components in the context of its application to fire safety engineering analysis supporting performance-based codes.

China Breakthrough for CSIRO Fire Safety Engineering
Press Release: 12 Aug 2003 Ref: 2003/142 Shanghai’s new landmark Southern Rail and Road Transport Hub will be designed to incorporate advanced fire technologies following a new contract won by Australia’s CSIRO Fire Safety Engineering (CSFE).
The Shanghai Southern Railway Station is a key government construction project and provides a key transport hub for road, rail and subway transport in the city.
CFSE will provide safety analysis, including CFD fire modelling, evacuation simulation and structure performance evaluation, within a cost-effective design for the building’s fire safety system.
This is the first time the Shanghai Fire Bureau has required a fire safety study to be implemented as a requirement for a building approval in Shanghai.
The work follows an earlier project by CSIRO to undertake a trial fire engineering study for the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center.
These projects will assist in positioning CFSE as a lead agency in the fire engineering market in Shanghai and China.
Both projects were secured through a strategic relationship between CMIT and the Shanghai Fire Research Institute.

  • At all times, take all reasonable care to ensure that your work and the consequences of your work cause no unacceptable risk to safety. Take all reasonable steps to make your management, and those to whom they have a duty of care, aware of the risks you identify; make anyone overruling or neglecting your professional advice formally aware of the consequent risks.
Back to Contents When Building a System
  • Examine the proposed use of proprietary digital communication systems and seek out common-cause failures between control and protection functions. Beware of novel approaches to specification, design and implementation of knowledge-based computing and control systems; be attentive to their attendant problems of verification, validation and the effect on safety-related operation. Be aware that, whilst distributed systems involving communications systems are relatively easy to assemble from standard commercial components, it is difficult to predict their overall operational behaviour and there may well be hidden complexities. Determine the adequacy of the protection and control systems for remote plant; enumerate the hazards to which the plant may be subjected and relate each to the proposed protection and control systems.
