About
Much of this information is gleaned from the Robotics Internet Resources Page of LPR, UMass. , which in turn was created using the comp.robotics FAQ maintained by Kevin Dowling (nivek@cmu.edu) . or using Jonathan Fletcher's JumpStation and just plain WWW surfing. Reading comp.robotics.misc and comp.robotics.research also helped a lot. Try also VLSI and robotics lab of the Indiana University , or the U. of Central Florida , they are comprehensive overviews of robotics related WWW sites. Kevin Dowling has converted the FAQ into an easy-to-use Hypertext FAQ. If necessary, you can get the latest FAQ from the MIT archive . Ron Kube's Grad Student's Who's Who in Robotics is also available (Also in WWW format)

MDA Space Missions constitutes the space business of MDA

For more than two decades, human space flight has been supported by advanced robotics developed by the Space Missions unit of MDA. We have combined complex robotics with control software to develop the Space Shuttle's Canadarm and the Mobile Servicing System for the International Space Station. Continuous support, upgrades and improvements ensure these mission-critical systems meet on-orbit requirements. MDA's reputation for innovative solutions has been further enhanced with the development of an extension to the Canadarm for on-orbit inspection of the Shuttle. This new arm will play a vital role in NASA's Return to Flight and all future shuttle missions.
MDA is involved in the area of satellite missions providing a variety of solutions to many customers around the world. MDA is currently developing Canada 's next generation of SAR Earth Observation satellite RADARSAT-2. The company is increasingly getting involved in a new generation of low-cost, innovative small satellite missions providing high value operational systems to clients in areas such as earth observation, information delivery, surveillance of space and space science. Leveraging our expertise in robotic technology and space-borne sensing systems, MDA is developing sophisticated systems for on-orbit servicing and planetary missions to explore the Moon and Mars.

One might ask why we would want to make a machine that looks, thinks and emotes like a human when we have plenty of humans already, many of whom do not have jobs or good places to live. It is important to re-emphasize that humanoids cannot and will not ever replace humans. Computers and humans are good at fundamentally different things. Calculators did not replace mathematicians. They did change drastically the way mathematics was taught. For example, the ability to mentally multiply large numbers, although impressive, is no longer a highly valued human capability. Calculators have not stolen from us part of what it means to be human, but rather, free our minds for more worthy efforts. As humanoids change the contours of our workforce, economy and society, they will not encroach on our sovereignty, but rather enable us to explore and further realize the very aspects of our nature we hold most dear.

Our dynamics simulators model any tree-configured mechanism ranging from a simple pendulum to an orbiting space station. They are designed to let you Assess Mechanical System Concept Feasibility Optimize Vehicle/Mechanism Design and Their Control System Verify and Test Control Software Analyze Mechanical or Control System Failure With Speed, Precision, and Results The Equations of Motion in our MDS programs are derived by Lagrangian formulation for forward and inverse dynamics. They accommodate contact constraints, prescribed motion, rigid and flexible body dynamics. They are solved by O(n^3) methods and by recursive O(n) methods, where n=degree of freedom of the plant. [The O(n) versions accommodate rigid body dynamics only at this time. Another O(n) version is being developed to simulate systems with both rigid/flex member bodies.] We have the Dynawiz1.dll
