"Boundary of quantum evolution under decoherence"
article by Navin Khaneja , Burkhard Luy and Steffen J. Glaser establishes physical limits on how closely a quantum mechanical system can be steered to a desired target state in the presence of relaxation. It appeared in the December 11, 2003 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
"Active Sensing and Data Driven Algorithm Selection"

Robot child aids doctor training
Posted on 10 September 2005
Clinical staff in New South Wales hospitals are set to improve their skills by training with a robot child.
The robot, known as Oscar, has been donated to Royal North Shore Hospital.
It will allow paediatric clinicians to practice their emergency responses to a number of life-threatening conditions in children, including car crash trauma, asthma attacks and resuscitation.
The Health Minister, John Hatzistergos, says Oscar is a welcome addition to health training facilities. Read more...
Solar-powered underwater robot unveiled
Posted on 10 September 2005
The National Science Foundation is set to unveil a solar-powered robot developed for undersea observation and water monitoring.
The robot technology will be showcased during a Sept. 16 workshop on leading-edge robotics in Arlington. Arthur Sanderson, professor of electrical, computer, and systems engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, will display the robotic technology being developed by a team of research groups. Sanderson will also participate on a panel of robotics experts who recently completed the World Technology Evaluation Center International Study of Robotics a two-year look at robotics research and development in the United States, Japan, South Korea and Western Europe.

Scaife Hall 310

Pittsburgh, PA 15213 Professor Matsuoka's research is directed toward developing neuromuscular rehabilitation and assistive robotic devices to understand and enhance human learning capabilities. There are three multidisciplinary approaches taken in this research. The first approach is the development of rehabilitation and assistive robots (i.e. wearable, haptic, and humanoid robots). There is growing acceptance of robots as safe devices for surgery and rehabilitation. However, the relationship between the design of the robot and the effect on the interacting person is not well understood. Professor Matsuoka intends to optimize robot design, actuators and sensors for safety, comfort and human motor performance enhancement.

Sony World : Europe meets Qrio
The Sony Dream World Expo has just taken place this week-end in Paris. It was the first event of this kind for Sony in Europe, and the very first time SDR 4X-II - sorry, Qrio - was presented out of Japan. Great show. Nice to see that the small android is going to be the new "symbol" of the brand. A little bit disappointed, though, that the brand new Aibo, ERS-7, has not been demonstrated. BTW, strange to see that the robot-dog will be sold at a price slightly higher in Europe (EUR2,000) than in Japan, starting in November. It was also funny to see people queueing to get a picture beside Qrio. I saw the same thing in Japan with Honda's Asimo. Definitely, forget about these silly flash mobs. The latest and hotest trend/hype/craze is a picture of you with a humanoid robot.
