ION PROPULSION
Over 50 Years in the Making
April 6, 1999: The ion propulsion system on Deep Space 1 is the culmination of over 50 years of development on electric engine systems in space. Launched on Oct. 24, 1998, Deep Space 1 will be the first spacecraft to actually use ion propulsion to reach another planetary body.
The engineering that makes this possible represents a journey that started more than half a century ago, when modern rocketry was invented. Looking back, Ernst Stuhlinger, a world expert on electric propulsion, said that the technology "owed its life-giving spark to Wernher von Braun."

Dr. Wernher von Braun, a rocket scientist from Germany, was first introduced to the possibility of electric propulsion in the 1930s, through his mentor, Dr. Hermann Oberth. But von Braun started his career working on chemical propulsion systems. Right: An artist's concept depicts the Deep Space 1 probe with its ion engine operating at full thrust. (Links to

Far Out Propulsion Conference
Blasts Off
Advanced Propulsion Research Conference opens today in Huntsville
April 6, 1999: Atoms locked in snow, a teaspoon from the heart of the sun, and the stuff that drives a starship will be on the agenda of an advanced space propulsion conference that opens today in Huntsville. Right: A fusion-powered spaceship starts braking into orbit around Titan, Saturn's methane-shrouded moon and a possible harbor for extraterrestrial life. Basic research on fusion rocket technology is one of several topics for this week's workshop. (NASA/Marshall) The tenth annual Advanced Propulsion Research Workshop will be held at the University of Alabama Tuesday through Thursday. It's sponsored by NASA, Marshall Space Flight Center, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. S essions in the conference include solar and microwave sails, beamed energy, tethers, advanced chemical rockets, nuclear propulsion, fusion research, and antimatter rockets.

In other words, you have to go someplace else. That first stop is low Earth orbit, followed by a boost that puts a probe on a long arc to its destination. Sometimes, the probe goes in the "wrong" direction, like the Cassini mission to Saturn which first is making "gravity slingshot" passes by Venus and the Earth as the price of using a conventional rocket to leave the ground.

Most of us have traveled on an airplane, or we know someone who has. Do you ever wonder how airplanes fly? What causes the lift that gets the airplane off the runway? How does a pilot control the movement of the airplane? Why are the engines on an airliner different from the engines on a fighter plane? How does aerodynamics affect the flight of a model rocket or a kite? The information at this site is provided by the NASA Glennn Learning Technologies Project (LTP) to give you a better understanding of how aircraft work.
