SOLAR ELECTRIC (ION) PROPULSION
Click here to see a time lapse video (4.4 MB Quicktime movie) of the DS1 Ion Thruster Compatibility Test taped on February 15, 1998. (Or you can get a smaller version : 2.5 MB). This testing was carried out on the DS1 spacecraft in the Solar Thermal Vacuum Chamber at JPL. Increasing the engine throttle level without increasing the available power caused the engine recycling in the video. The engine provides about 10 times the specific impulse (ratio of thrust to propellant used) of chemical propulsion. DS1 is the first spacecraft to use ion propulsion as the primary propulsion system. It is one of the 12 advanced technologies that was validated by DS1 during flight. Rocket engines work by pushing propellant away from the spacecraft. The action of the propellant leaving the engine causes a reaction that pushes the spacecraft in the opposite direction. This is what causes a balloon to rush around as the air is allowed to escape; the air pushes on the balloon as it leaves. An ion engine uses this same principle, but the great innovation is in how efficiently this happens. The gas xenon (which is like helium or neon, but heavier) flows into the ion engine, where it is given an electrical charge. Charged atoms are called ions. As soon as the xenon atoms become xenon ions, they can be pushed around by an electrical voltage. A pair of grids in the ion engine, electrified to almost 1300 volts, accelerates the ions to very high speed and shoots them out of the engine. As the ions race away from the engine, they push back on the spacecraft, propelling it in the opposite direction. [The electricity for this remarkable system can be provided by solar arrays, as on Deep Space 1 and Dawn, or by a nuclear power system, as on Project Prometheus. The principle of operation of the ion engine is the same.]

Innovative space transportation systems now in development by NASA and its partners promise a new era of scientific discovery in space. But the struggle to unlock the secrets of our solar system presents unique new challenges. Central among them: faster access throughout the solar system, and the ability to rendezvous with, orbit and conduct in situ exploration of planets, satellites and other solar system bodies. HERE To read more on the objectives, approach and status of In-Space Propulsion technologies read the In Space Propulsion Overview and presented here by the Project Manager and Technical Area Managers. NASA Engineers Test Propulsion System Aimed at Enabling Deep Space Exploration
August 23
NASA engineers have begun testing unique propulsion hardware that could enable more ambitious, cost effective exploration of deep space. The technology, a High Voltage Hall Accelerator, or HiVHAC, is a rocket thruster that could reduce fuel load and spacecraft mass, decrease transit times and launch costs, and allow for larger scientific payloads key elements to the exploration of Earth's neighboring planets and our Solar System.

The CIP engine is a device which converts centrifugal force (the pushing away of a spinning object from its center of rotation) into a linear, unidirectional force. This device does not require any medium to react against or ejection of its propellant mass in order to propel. STS - Solar Thruster Sailor RSS - Ring Segment System ... Fig. 7 N E W on June 27/2003 in red colour Through using simple lever rules, an advantageous weight distribution and the fact that the shooted probe doesn´t have to carry it´s own fuel, small lightweight probes could reach now considerable higher speeds with rotational catapult propulsion than direct driven space crafts. That means we don´t have to develop new sorts of thrusters (such as the vasimir drive) to go faster. Just using what we have now would do it. This mechanical way to enhance speed works like car gears, were the gear is the speed lever The Rotational Slingshot Catapult is a giant thruster powered light weight carbon fibre ring with carbon fibre belts and a center propulsion unit to cause rotation which is able to shoot spacecraft and material with high speeds through space. A space transporter which doesn´t leave his place when transporting. What would it be good for? For instance throwing a flyby probe outside of our sun system with conventional chemical fuel, something we couldn´t do with this sort of propulsion when the probe would be direct driven.
The point is, that the probe doesn´t have to accelerate the fuel. And the catapult has only to accelerate the fuel located in it´s center between the thruster units hence saving force in contrast to direct acceleration of this mass. The saved force can now be used to accelerate the probe and the lightweight pipe ring using a
