On April 25th -26th, 1986 the World's worst nuclear power accident occurred at Chernobyl in the former USSR (now Ukraine). The Chernobyl nuclear power plant located 80 miles north of Kiev had 4 reactors and whilst testing reactor number 4 numerous safety procedures were disregarded. At 1:23am the chain reaction in the reactor became out of control creating explosions and a fireball which blew off the reactor's heavy steel and concrete lid. The Chernobyl accident killed more than 30 people immediately, and as a result of the high radiation levels in the surrounding 20-mile radius, 135,00 people had to be evacuated. Nuclear fusion: power to the people?
By Charles Arthur Published Wednesday 6th July 2005 11:40 GMT Get breaking Reg news straight to your desktop - click here to find out how Analysis It's G8 week, and climate change is high on the agenda. And now that even George Bush has acknowledged that climate change is (a) happening and (b) is at least partly due to humans but insisted it (c) should be tackled through technology, why not focus again on a technology that's (1) happening and (2) partly controlled by humans? That is, nuclear fusion. Unlike fission, already used to produce most of France's electricity, fusion isn't commercial yet. Even its most positive advocates reckon it'll be more than 25 years before a fusion reactor could contribute usefully to the power grid ("useful" being defined as a steady output of 1 gigawatt; the UK has about 42 GW of installed electric plant).

Neither Three Mile Island nor Chernobyl stopped China from building this nuclear power plant near Hangzhou in the 1980s. The country wants to build 27 more reactors by 2020. Some environmentalists say the plan makes sense because it would mean less reliance on coal and fewer emissions tied to global warming.

Peter W. Huber, Mark P. Mills EMAIL RESPOND PRINT Y pm in August, and a lot dimmer at 4 am F New York Times , Greenpeace, and the Harvard Divinity School agree: the answer to both problems is . . . efficiency and the development of renewable sources of power. Nevertheless, the secretary of energy, his boss (now a Texas oilman, not a Georgia peanut farmer), and the rest of the country should look elsewhere. T E Most significantly, the next couple of decades will see us convert to the hybrid gasoline-and-electric car. A steadily rising fraction of the power produced under the hood of a car already is used to generate electricity: electrical modules are replacing components that belts, gears, pulleys, and shafts once drove. Steering, suspension, brakes, fans, pumps, and valves will eventually go electric; in the end, electricity will drive the wheels, too. Gas prices and environmental mandates have little to do with this changeover. The electric drive train simply delivers better performance, lower cost, and less weight.

Additionally, Mothers for Peace concerns itself with issues of peace, social justice and a safe environment. The Mothers for Peace is taking a leading role in the creation of a nationwide alliance for developing defenses at nuclear power plants. It is doing so by filing an appeal in Federal Court. In the litigation involving Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, the Mothers for Peace is requesting careful examination of security issues before licensing a new spent fuel storage facility. This case has the potential for setting important precedents for all U.S. nuclear facilities. The funding required for this Federal Court appeal is also historic: $100,000.

Specifically, the WNA is concerned with nuclear power generation and all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle, including mining, conversion, enrichment, fuel fabrication, plant manufacture, transport, and the safe disposition of spent fuel. The WNA serves its Members by facilitating their interaction on technical, commercial and policy matters and by promoting wider public understanding of nuclear technology. This dual role can be stated as follows:
    • To serve as the pre-eminent global forum and commercial meeting place for those engaged in providing the world's largest source of safe, economic and environmentally friendly energy; and
To provide a respected information service on nuclear energy and to speak pro-actively on behalf of the nuclear industry amongst policymakers, opinion leaders, the media and the public.

A new type of battery based on the radioactive decay of nuclear material is 10 times more powerful than similar prototypes and should last a decade or more without a charge, scientists announced this week. The longevity would make the battery ideal for use in pacemakers or other surgically implanted devices, developers say, or it might power spacecraft or deep-sea probes. You might also find these nuclear batteries running sensors and other small devices in your home in a few years. Such devices "don't consume much power," said University of Rochester electrical engineer Philippe Fauchet, "and yet having to replace the battery every so often is a real pain in the neck." Fauchet told LiveScience the batteries could last a dozen years. They're

Will Nuclear Power Put Humans On Mars?
    By Greg Clark

    Staff Writer
posted: 08:00 am ET 21 May 2000 When it comes to attracting interest in new mission plans to far-out places in the solar system, it is often the wildly futuristic concepts that get the attention. Antimatter propulsion, solar and magnetic sails all make great stories, but such futuristic concepts don't do anything to get humans out to the moon, or Mars, or to various local comets or asteroids within the foreseeable future. With these futuristic technologies barely out of their conceptual phases, practical use of such far-out concepts for human space transportation is decades away at best. So when planners at NASA begin to examine space-travel goals beyond low Earth orbit, beyond 2005 when the International Space Station is scheduled to be complete, they are faced with making bigger, brawnier and incredibly more expensive versions of the chemical rockets in use today.
