Scientist Susan Hubbard uses ground penetrating radar to determine moisture in vineyard soil. Story Tools RELATED CNN/Money: What boycott? U.S. buys Bordeaux ABOUT GPR Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is commonly used by the military. Instead of the geomagnetic waves being recorded and analyzed to detect moisture, GPR systems can be mounted in airplanes or helicopters to seek out buried weapons, equipment, bodies or mass graves. It has other uses in industrial and construction projects. YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Robert Mondavi Viniculture Cool Science University of California, Berkeley or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? (CNN) Grapes and geophysics may go together as smoothly as grilled vegetables and a fine Merlot. Scientists at the University of California at Berkeley are using ground penetrating radar (GPR), a tool better known for its military uses, to help winemakers create tastier, more uniform wines. "GPR is an electromagnetic signal that travels in the ground. What we do is try to understand how fast that signal travels and that tells us a lot about the moisture content of the soil," said Susan Hubbard, a hydrogeophysicist at University of California, Berkeley, and staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

He’s ‘against America, because it doesn’t care about those who die in Pakistan.’ ROBERT HARBISON – STAFF 'Why do they hate us?' By Peter Ford "Why do they hate us?" asked President Bush in his speech to Congress last Thursday night. It is a question that has ached in America's heart for the past two weeks. Why did those 19 men choose to wreck the icons of US military and economic power? Most Arabs and Muslims knew the answer, even before they considered who was responsible. Retired Pakistani Air Commodore Sajad Haider - a friend of the US - understood why. Radical Egyptian-born cleric and US enemy Abu Hamza al-Masri understood. And Jimmy Nur Zamzamy, a devout Muslim and advertising executive in Indonesia, understood.

USS Bulkeley
We take a ride on the Navy's newest destroyer.

Our tugboat speeds up the Hudson River on this exceptionally warm foggy day in December. We watch the debris float by and wonder what's really in the water that's spraying up over the cabin and onto us. The tugboat is moving as fast as it can because there's a brand-new U.S. Navy destroyer waiting for us underneath the Verrazano Bridge. One minute we can see nothing but gray fog. The next we see the hull of the USS Bulkeley (DDG 84) rising out of the Hudson, and we see her crew standing on deck manning the rails. It's a moving sight. As we approach, a motorized dinghy with two Navy seamen and a machine gun mounted to it pulls away from the ship and circles the tugboat. Security is extra tight. The tugboat pulls up alongside the ship and it's finally time to get on board. This involves climbing up a 15-ft. Jacob's ladderthe same kind of rope ladder with wooden rungs that has been used for centuries to board ships. The first thing we see as we swing over the top of the ladder is a U.S. Navy gunner's mate standing behind a loaded M60 machine gun on the deck above us. And there's no question that she's ready to fire it if necessary. This is a military vessel on alert. Next
