Welcome to the Wake Forest University Department of Military Science (ARMY ROTC) Home Page. The ROTC program is designed to train the future leaders of our nation's Army. It teaches students how to make decisions, shapes their leadership and management skills and prepares them to LEAD. Many of the "Fortune 500" companies hire former officers for key leadership positions. The ROTC program here at WFU is the host school for it's sister school, Winston-Salem State University . Academic classes are taught at each campus and leadership labs are held at WFU. Students can register and attend ROTC classes for the first two years without any obligation to the Army, however, students incur an obligation to the Army in the last two years (junior and senior) of their ROTC classes. If you are interested in finding out how to join the program here at Wake Forest University, use the navigation bar above or contact the department Recruiting Operations Officer at (336) 758-4546.

DR: The best military science fiction is written by real combat vets. Can you tell us about your military backgrounds? David Sherman: I enlisted in the Marine Corps right out of high school in Omaha in 1962. Went to boot camp in San Diego and infantry training in Camp San Onofre, Camp Pendleton, California. Then served two years in Company L, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, First Marine Brigade, based at MCAS Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii, where I rose from PFC rifleman to lance corporal fire team leader. Next came a tour as a military policeman at Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, North Carolina. My last tour of duty was in Vietnam, where I was first a fire team leader in India Company, Third Battalion, First Marines and promoted to corporal, then in a Combined Action Platoon in Ky Hoa village, several miles from Chu Lai. (Mine was the first CAP in the Chu Lai area.) I was released from active duty four years, three months, and twenty-six days later from the same place I entered it, San Diego. I qualified as an Expert Rifleman, and was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal, along with a slew of unit citations and campaign and service medals, including three Vietnamese medals and ribbons.
