Photo Database Alumni Webpage Uniform Quick Guide FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) UW AROTC KINNEAR HUSKY BATTALION HISTORY Army ROTC at the University of Washington has a long and illustrious history. On January 24th, 1862, the Territorial Legislature of Washington specified that one of the University of Washington's four original institutional departments would be dedicated to the study of military science. Although the creation of a Military Department was mandated at the opening of the Civil War, it was not until the late 1870s that plans were developed. Finally, in 1882, the University President established a Military Department and in 1884, an active program was in place. The Kinnear Husky Battalion takes it name from Cadet Captain C.A. Kinnear. Cadet Captain Kinnear led a group of University of Washington cadets during an operation to assist the Seattle authorities in quelling the City Riots of 1886. For their assistance to local authorities, General John Gibbon presented the Battalion with a silk 38-star American flag. This flag is still on display on the ground floor of Clark Hall, outside the Military Science Department's offices.

7. Æ Aeragon - Site Index
Aeragon traces the development of military science and technology through modern history and how the technology has been incorporated into civilian uses.

Military Technology Transfer Aeragon examines how material human existence has developed out of advances in military technology. Few elements of modern life are not the result of military development in some way. For example, the way that you are seeing this site, the Internet and computer, grew out of military technologies. Here, you can obtain a great deal of information about technological advances in military equipment down through the ages and their transfer to civilian uses. Many of today's most popular consumer items were actually developed by the world's militaries. This includes many articles of clothing as well as things that would seemingly be unrelated such as trendy furniture. Some of the most sought after civilian vehicles and also certain modern building styles were spin-offs of military technologies. The consumer electronic products of today all owe their existence to advancements in military technology. In the few cases where the whole concept of a consumer electronic device is not the product of military technology, the underlying hardware technology such as printed circuits is. The influence of military design affects not only the functional aspects of material life, but also, the aesthetics of it. This site contains information on many aspects of how modern societies have advanced technologically and materially through military advances. It also encompasses some facets that similar studies do not include. Many aspects of the social structures of modern Western societies are a direct result of defense advancements.

CMU - ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corps)
The Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) is an educational program which combines college electives in Military Science with practical and unmatched leadership training. Our military science courses are designed to prepare men and women for succeeding in college, becoming Army officers, and developing in their chosen career. As part of Army ROTC, you'll be in the company of a diverse group of individuals with broad interests. Individuals who were presidents of their student governments, captains of their varsity sports teams, club presidents, or members of the National Honor Society. Your courses will include Leadership Development, Military Skills, and Adventure Training. ROTC cadets are regular students just like everyone else on campus. They take a regular schedule of classes and have an academic major. Once a week they meet together as a group for leadership laboratory, along with their regular ROTC academic class meetings. During lab they wear military uniforms and conduct military and leadership training. Students can take ROTC as an elective course, an academic minor, or pursue the entire program, which culminates in a commission as a Second Lieutenant—an Army officer. ROTC is an equal opportunity program. We welcome all full-time students to try out the program and participate in our many activities. All qualified students have the chance to pursue an officer's commission, regardless of gender, race or religion. ROTC promotes a physically fit lifestyle and provides a drug-free environment.
