About us ... TransAction Editing (partners, Dr. Simon Dunton and V. C. C. Dunton) was established in 1997. Its founder, Simon Dunton (background - B.A. in modern languages, University of Cambridge; Ph.Dr. in general linguistics, Charles University, Prague; plus an EFL teaching qualification), had worked on the Transactions of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy since 1982, and when production of the journal was contracted to him in 1997 it was with the remit to launch an online electronic version. TransAction Editing made the journal available on this Web site from 1998 until 2002 and additionally subcontracted CatchWord (now part of Ingenta) to start an electronic archive in 2001. Enquiries from publishers who might be able to make use of our experience of editing and producing technical journals will be very welcome. (The contract to produce the Transactions was transferred to Maney Publishing with effect from January 2003.) TransAction Editing is an associate member of the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers. It combines belief in the electronic future of research publication with an intention to maintain high standards of conventional copy-editing and proofreading and hopes thereby to assist publishers in making their content clear to foreign researchers and future generations of scholars as well as the authors' present peers.

Aims and Scope: Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy Review
publishes papers dealing with both applied and theoretical aspects of extractive and process metallurgy and mineral processing. It emphasizes research germane to specific industrial processes and research that examines economic and environmental issues as well as basic engineering technology. Review papers devoted to one genesis, properties and uses of minerals, the scientific, engineering and economic aspects of the extraction, separation and purification of minerals and metals, and the post-treatment of mineral processing and extractive treatment of mineral processing and extractive metallurgy effluents are also invited. In addition to regular issues, special issues addressing narrowly focused subjects of regional or topical significance are published when the Editors feel there is sufficient interest among readers.

Failures of Pipelines
Gas and oil pipelines have established an impressive safety record over the years. However, failures have occurred for an assortment of reasons. Some of the causes of failure are identified in this commentary. Since the 1940s, all of the oil and gas transmission lines have been built by welding. In general, American Petroleum Institute (API) 5L specification steels are used in pipelines. Pipeline wall thicknesses are established on the pressure in the line and on the allowable hoop stress levels for the material. The allowable stress levels for gas pipelines vary based on the location of the pipeline and are regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Pipelines are pressure tested in addition to nondestructive testing prior to being put into service. Normally, pipelines are hydrostatically stressed to levels above their working pressure and near their specified minimum yield strength. This pressure is held for several hours to ensure that the pipeline does not have defects that may cause failure in use. This proof test of pipelines provides an additional level of confidence that is not found in many other structures.

PMRC was founded in 1993 and was rededicated rededicated and renamed the Morris "Butch" Boorky Powder Metallurgy Research Center on September 12, 2003 to recognize Boorky's contributions to the industry. His family has made a significant gift to endow the center's research activities and to establish a fellowship leading to a master's or doctorate degree in powder metallurgy. The center promotes the manufacturing excellence and competitiveness of the P/M industry , by undertaking research programs that are consistent with the priorities of the industry. Research projects are initiated and/or approved by members and are carried out by students and faculty members from a variety of academic disciplines, and are guided by the insights of P/M industrialists. PMRC conducts two types of research projects: technical projects that focus on scientific and engineering issues relevant to all stages of P/M processing; and management projects that address issues related to the organization and interconnectedness of the P/M industry. Technical projects are structured to advance the fundamental scientific understanding of P/M processes as well as to enhance specific engineering functions. PMRC operates in a consortium format that enables P/M companies to pool resources for research that are significantly larger in scope than would be possible for any single company. These resources serve as the basis to leverage research support with federal, state and private foundation funds.
