11. Iron Casting Research Institute
ICRI serves iron foundry members through technology transfer. Offers a technical paper on Grey Iron metallurgy and properties, originally presented in 1969.
http://www.ironcasting.org/
SERVING MEMBERS THROUGH IRON CASTING TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER The Gray Iron Research Institute (GIRI) was organized in 1939 when ten foundry firms, striving to improve their melting operations, joined forces to employ the Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio. Joined by additional members, GIRI split from Battelle in 1948. In 1982 GIRI was renamed Iron Casting Research Institute (ICRI) to reflect the variety of irons produced at member plants. ICRI presently has sixteen members located in eleven states and one member with three foundries located in Canada.
Our Mission
To provide means by which each member has the opportunity to become more technically proficient in producing low cost, high quality iron castings. To select members who can benefit from the results but also have the qualifications to contribute to this mutual effort. To operate with the optimum number of members to permit employment of a highly qualified staff, yet to limit the number of members so that the unique rapport, so evident between members, can function. To maintain a technical staff which, by interaction with member technical and operating personnel, can:

Good basic article on how cryogenic processing works. Author unknown. Date, circa 1998.
http://lennon.pub.csufresno.edu/~rlk16/cryo.html
BASICS OF CRYOGENIC METALLURGY Table of Contents (links) Introduction The thermal treatment of metals must certainly be regarded as one of the most important developments of the industrial age. After more than a century, research continues into making metallic components stronger and more wear-resistant. One of the more modern processes being used to treat metals (as well as other materials) is cryogenic tempering. While the science of heat treatment is well known and widely understood, the principles of cryogenic tempering remain a mystery to most people in industry. Information regarding this process is full of contradictions and unanswered questions. Until recently, cryogenic tempering was viewed as having little value, due to the often brittle nature of the finished product. It is only since the development of computer modeled cooling and reheat curves that the true benefits of cryogenically treated materials have become available to industry and the general public.
The purpose of this work is not to break new ground in cryogenic science, nor will it answer all of the questions surrounding this process. Rather, this is a condensation of much of the information available concerning the effects cryogenic treatment has on metal stucture, as well as an overview of the actual process involved in treating parts. Also included are theories and conclusions regarding the optimum use of cryogenic tempering on steels, costs and feasability notwithstanding. All information is as up to date as possible, having been gathered from various scientific and industrial databases (no books were harmed during the preparation of this treatise).
