(updated 7/31/2005) The most efficient colored LEDs have overal luminous efficacy of approx. 53 lumens/watt and others may soon hit 65-70. The most efficient white LEDs get around 37 lumens/watt, with ones that achieve close to 60 lumens/watt expected to be in production in 2005. Many really good ones still only achieve about 20-35 lumens/watt. For comparison: USA usual 100W "A19" incandescent - 17.1 lumens/watt.
Compact fluorescents - mostly 45-60 lumens/watt including ballast losses.
32 watt T8 fluorescent in "average condition" - typically around 80 lumens/watt including ballast losses. My LED top page, with links to manufacturers. Updated slightly 9/13/2005. My page explaining where some big claims of LED efficiency come from, including applications where they actually are a lot more efficient than incandescent lamps. The Association of Lighting Designers is the professional body representing lighting designers in all fields in the United Kingdom and the rest of the world. A voluntarily run association, bound by a constitution, it exists to provide a resource and forum for discussion and development of artistic and creative aims amongst designers from the fields of Theatre, Television, Architecture, Education, Industrial and Corporate Presentation and Manufacturing. The Association of Lighting Designers grew out of the Society of British Theatre Lighting Designers. This club of designers expanded its membership in 1981 to embrace lighting professionals from all fields. After original proposals that the new association should be a trade union, the first executive set out aims that embraced negotiations through the established trade unions, but which allowed the ALD to develop as a friendly society - an open forum for the discussion and furtherance of lighting art and the appraisal of production techniques and equipment. With the explosion of lighting design within the creative process in stage production of the late 1980s and early 1990s and the proliferation of lighting elements in educational courses in many colleges and institutions, the Association of Lighting Designers has consolidated its role as the focus of lighting throughout Britain.
