The Michigan dinner: Wednesday night U of M HFES Student Chapter
The University of Michigan chapter of HFES hopes to further promote this human centered approach to the design of systems by exposing its members to facilities researching and applying human factors concepts, and talks by researchers who are working in this field. U of M HFES will also sponsor events that encourage the interaction among students, faculty, and practitioners interested in this field. Human Factors and Ergonomics are inherently interdisciplinary fields, therefore people from different fields who are interested in humans factors are encouraged

Graduate Program in Human Factors
Human Factors is also referred to as Engineering Psychology. Students interested in pursuing a graduate degree in Human Factors should apply for admission in the regular fashion to the Mechanical Engineering Department, indicating on their application that they are interested in Human Factors. It is strongly recommended that the prospective student identify and contact the potential thesis supervisor before application to the programme.
Master of Science (Human Factors) Program
The primary component of the Master of Science (Human Factors) program is the Thesis. The Thesis reports the results of an independent research investigation carried out by the student. The Thesis must be carried out under the direction of the candidate's supervisor, normally, on the campus of Tufts University. The Thesis may involve an investigation which is fundamental in nature, or may be applied, incorporating creative design. Through the Thesis, candidates are expected to give evidence of competence in research and a sound understanding of the area of specialization involved. The M.Sc. (HF) program normally requires successful completion of eight 100-level (or above) course credits, an official proposal defence, a seminar, and successful defence of a Thesis at a M.Sc. oral examination. Composition of the course program must be selected in co-operation with the student's academic supervisor. M.Sc. candidates normally complete their course requirements in the first two semesters, and the thesis by the end of the second year in the program.

Human Factors and Ergonomics
Industrial Engineering Elective Focus Area
Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) represent increasingly important engineering specialties. The dramatic increase in computer technology makes system performance increasingly dependent on the match between system characteristics and human capabilities. Opportunities to apply HFE are very broad and graduates with this focus area find employment in diverse industries that include vehicle systems (e.g., GM, Ford, Delphi, Visteon, DaimlerChrysler, Caterpillar), healthcare (e.g., GE, Medtronics, Guidant), computer systems (e.g., Microsoft, Intel, IBM), and consulting (e.g., Accenture, Battelle). Human Factors considers cognitive characteristics and ergonomics considers physical characteristics. The HFE EFA builds on the required coursework for undergraduate students in Industrial Engineering and provides advanced education in psychology, systems, statistics, and biomechanics. The EFA consists of 21 semester hours (SH) as listed below. Students who take 15 semester hours from the department of psychology (031:XX) receive a minor in psychology. This requirement can be met with the three required courses (31:001, 31:016, 31:120) and two electives from the table below. The first four courses in the table provide a general background and the three elective courses allow for an emphasis in human factors (HF) or ergonomics (E).

Minor in Human Factors and Ergonomics
The Minor in Human Factors and Ergonomics is intended to meet the needs of the students who have an interest in any type of design and who recognize the importance of taking account of human characteristics, both strengths and weaknesses, in the design of artifacts intended for human use (e.g., equipment, computer software, consumer products, and even entire work environments).
The minor should also be of particular interest to students who have an interest in doing graduate work in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Industrial Design, etc.
Entry into the minor requires that General Psychology (or an equivalent introductory course) be taken as a prerequisite. Students who have completed PSY101 and who are interested in a minor in Psychology are expected to meet with a Psychology Department faculty member to discuss the selection of appropriate courses. No more than three courses that are required for a student’s major can count towards fulfilling requirements for the minor. Required prerequisite Credits General Psychology course (PSY 101 or equivalent) Required courses PSY 212 Physiological Psychology PSY 213 Sensation and Perception PSY 250 WI Industrial Psychology PSY 330 Cognitive Psychology

Introduction
The ORITE human factors and ergonomics laboratory focuses on the relationship of the automobile driver to the road environment, especially in terms of improving traffic flow and driver safety and comfort. Research topics include traffic signs, pavement markings, curve delineation, Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS), work zones, traffic signals, and other related technologies. The core research efforts have focused on nighttime visibility of pavement markings and legibility and visibility of traffic signs under varying conditions, such as nighttime, rain, snow, and fog. Improved visibility and legibility of traffic control devices allows for a longer driver reaction time and less stress. These in turn lead to greater driver comfort and better driver decisions, ultimately resulting in fewer driver errors and traffic accidents, especially by elderly or impaired drivers. Major sponsors of ORITE Human Factors research include the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Ohio (ODOT) and other state departments of transportation, and industry.
