Introduction
Engineering technology is the profession in which a knowledge of mathematics and natural sciences gained by higher education, experience and practice is devoted primarily to the implementation and extension of existing technology for the benefit of humanity (Engineering Technology Council, 1994). Increasing technological aspects of all modern activities have led to the need for highly skilled persons to design, construct, install, maintain, manage, operate, produce and sell sophisticated technical systems and products. Departmental programs emphasize the application of theoretical concepts. Classes of carefully coordinated laboratory experiences and lectures are utilized. Courses emphasize theoretical concepts and principles for solutions applicable to modern technological problems. Students are prepared for rapidly changing life experiences with mathematics, science and general education. This preparation is designed to enable graduates to remain current, as well as advance, in their professional field.

The Correspondence of Charles Darwin was published while work continued on Volumes 14-21. Over 50 new letters from Darwin were recorded and transcribed while more letters were translated from the French, Italian and German. The Darwin Correspondence Project has won international recognition, most recently when it received the prestigious Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education, presented to its editors by Queen Elizabeth.
The fourth volume of the Edison papers was published and work is underway on volume five and on the electronic edition. The Edison web site has received wide praise. Recent History of Science and Engineering on the Web Jesse H. Ausubel, Program Director The goal of this program is to develop and diffuse a new way of creating, accessing, and preserving the historical record of recent major technical and scientific events by using the Internet. Use of the web allows the actual participants in important technical events, for example, the invention of the computer mouse, to volunteer their own recollections. Initial grants supported the creation of over 30 web sites by ten professional societies, six universities, and a museum, on a wide variety of topics ranging from the development of the artificial heart to the planning, construction, and early operation of the Trans-Alaska pipeline. The goal is to create interactive sites attracting contributions by participants in the actual scientific or technical development to which the site is devoted.

    History
As nanoscience has advanced and discoveries in the field applied, the potential contributions of nanotechnology to future economic growth has brought increasing government attention. Today, nanotechnology is a top research priority of the Bush administration.
Attempts to coordinate federal work on the nanoscale began in November 1996, when staff members from several agencies decided to meet regularly to discuss their plans and programs in nanoscale science and technology. This group continued informally until September 1998, when it was designated as the Interagency Working Group on Nanotechnology (IWGN) under the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) .
The IWGN sponsored numerous workshops and studies to define the state of the art
in nanoscale science and technology and to forecast possible future developments. Two relevant background publications were produced by the group between July and September 1999: Nanostructure Science and Technology: A Worldwide Study, a report based on the findings of an expert panel that visited nanoscale science and technology laboratories around the world; and Nanotechnology Research Directions, a workshop report with input from academic, private sector, and government participants. These documents laid the groundwork and provided the justification for seeking to raise nanoscale science and technology to the level of a national initiative.
