The Previous Foresight Rounds - A Brief History
In May 1993, William Waldegrave, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, launched the Government’s White Paper, Realising our Potential - A Strategy for Science, Engineering and Technology’. In the White Paper, the Government emphasised the importance of science, engineering and technology to wealth creation and the quality of life while sustaining a strong science and engineering base in the country. The White Paper indicated that the Government would launch a Technology Foresight Programme, led by the Chief Scientific Advisor. The aim would be to ensure closer interaction between scientists, industry and government through a programme, which sought to identify future opportunities and threats for science engineering and technology. st Round of Foresight (1994 – 1999) The first round of Foresight was launched in 1994 and brought together experts from industry, government and academia into 15 sector-facing Panels to explore opportunities in different sectors of the economy. During the main analysis phase, these panels considered emerging market and technological opportunities over a 20-year timescale, consequent priorities for research, and other actions needed to exploit them.

The history of engineering courses at Ohio University extends back to 1890 with the creation of the Department of Physics and Electrical Engineering. In 1904, the Department of Mathematics and Civil Engineering was created. As part of a major academic reorganization in 1936 the College of Applied Sciences was established to combine these departments and Home Economics. By 1938, degrees were also offered in architectural engineering and industrial arts (to become industrial technology in 1956). Mechanical engineering was added in 1948, followed by chemical engineering in 1958. In 1963 the college was renamed the College of Engineering and Technology, and Home Economics was moved to the College of Education. The department of industrial and systems engineering was created in 1968. As stated in the university's current Bulletin, the College of Engineering and Technology "provides a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences, and applies them to develop ways to economically utilize the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of humankind and the environment." The College of Engineering and Technology is comprised of six departments, offering seven Bachelor of Science degrees. The college also offers 5 Master's degree and 3 Doctorate degree programs.

    Science, Technology, and Society
The Program in Science, Technology, and Society (STS) focuses on the ways in which scientific, technological, and social factors interact to shape modern life. The program brings together humanists, social scientists, engineers, and natural scientists, all committed to transcending the boundaries of their disciplines in a joint search for new insights and new ways of reaching science and engineering students. The goal of the program is to set up a forum to explore the relationship between what scientists and engineers do and the constraints, needs, and responses of society. Located in a major university where most people study science and engineering, STS is dedicated to understanding the context of science and engineering.
    Undergraduate Study
Engineering and science students are increasingly seeking to understand the social and historical contexts in which they will work and the social consequences of what they will do in their professional careers. STS subjects help them think realistically and creatively about the intellectual, moral, political, and social issues raised by the rapid growth of science and technology in the 20th century and beyond.

What is Financial Engineering? http://www.fenews.com/what-is-fe/what-is-fe.html Financial Engineering News is a publication geared towards professionals in the fairly new field of financial engineering. This section offers non-professionals in the field some explanations of what financial engineers do. For example, one CEO describes it as involving "the development and creative application of financial theory and financial instruments to structure solutions to complex financial problems and to exploit financial opportunities." The financial engineers quoted here use science-based mathematical tools, such as derivatives, to make decisions about saving, investing, borrowing, lending, and managing risk. The authors offer some historical background and discussion of why they use the term "financial engineering" as opposed to "financial analyst." Other financial engineers are invited to send in their definitions of financial engineering to be included on this website. [VF] Back to Contents Back to Top

    Our History
Engineering and Computer Science at PSU: A Remarkable Past and Bright Future
Engineers like straight lines, but strategists know they occasionally must hit their target from oblique angles. Using the angles is how PSU created its highly regarded engineering school in Portland. Dr. H. Chik M. Erzurumlu, Dean Emeritus of the PSU Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science, is a hopeful visionary: "Look at the track record of where we started in the 60s and where the college is now. At this rate, the College promises to be an exciting place for creating the next generation of technology."
1960-1980: Founding, independence and strategic steps The Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science started in 1960 when the Applied Science Department was organized; but, Maseeh College roots go back to the late 1950s with the start of pre-engineering courses. Early advocates of engineering education at Portland State "knew we couldn't go all the way at once. We had to take it one step at a time," says Dr. Erzurumlu.

technology and engineering in the American Experience A Survey of Literature Does technology Drive history? The Dilemma of Technological Determinism
    http://www.cr.nps.gov/history/resedu/bb_williams.htm
Technology and Engineering in the American Experience: A Survey of Literature By James C. Williams T he simultaneity of the American and the Industrial revolutions during the late-eighteenth century set Americans on a path that embraced technology and engineering as a major part of their national identity. Progress in political liberty seemed to go hand in hand with improved scientific knowledge, advances in technology, and engineering achievements. Technological progress reduced labor, enriched leisure, improved health, and brought forth abundance. In the rising tide of democratic-capitalism, technology was the fuel and lubricant that propelled society forward, and where Americans encountered obstacles, they most often turned to technology to "fix" them. Thus, wherever one looks in American history, technological themes are evident. America’s technological experience began with a colonial experience abundant in natural resources and graced by a fertile craft tradition. During the revolutionary era, military necessity and the need to build a strong and independent nation sustained technological change, and settlement of the vast North American continental landmass that followed during the nineteenth century spawned development of powerful technologies and inspired remarkable engineering achievements. By 1900, the rise of a complex urban-industrial society seemed to be the logical outcome of Americans technological enthusiasm, and subsequently, a system-center technological society has characterized American life.

The origins of the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm – "Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan", KTH – go back to 1827, as the "Teknologiska Institutet" then began to offer education in technological subjects with a strong professional touch. Its education programme was meant to be "popular as well as practical", as the industrialization process of modern society was then getting under way; this called for a school that could meet the ever-increasing demand for engineers. Thus the educational focus of the new institute was set on applied technology, not on its scientific foundations. However, these two approaches were not incompatible, not even in the 19th century! Basic research and practical engineering did often cross-fertilize each other in those days also. An example of this was chemistry on an industrial scale; the scientific explanations of its processes were then arriving one by one. Another was electricity, originally a subject area of purely scientific interest, which was becoming something most useful in everyday life. Thus the new school of technology was able to maintain good relations with the industrial establishment without having to renounce the academic aspect. One step on its way to academic status was that of introducing, in 1877, the name Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (in Swedish "högskola" is synonymous with university). By and by, systematic research activities were undertaken, and the students at KTH were subjected to the requirement of completing a final degree paper. Formally, the final academic recognition of KTH as an establishment of higher learning arrived in 1927, when its right to confer the degree of Doctor of Technology was promulgated.
