and the students and scholars who have either visited it in Florence or have had reason to come to its Homepage. There is no attempt to provide a full listing of internet resources for the history of science or its many sister disciplines; it is hoped that the sources indicated will give access to that wider world. The Istituto is one of the main centers for those disciplines in Italy and Europe, and it provides several on-line services, including this one. The Museo has an important, specialized collection of scientific instruments and artifacts. Emphasized here, then, are Italian and European sites with related activities or interests. Emphasized also are sites which are the result of concerted efforts on the part of their designers to explore the use of the internet for serious research and teaching, wherever they may be in the world. (McGinn) the application of resources to solve a problem (such as knowledge, skills, processes, techniques, tools and raw materials). an encompasing term to describe the level of achievement in science, mathematics and engineering of a group or culture. in economics , technology is the current state of our knowledge of how to combine resources to produce desired products (and our knowledge of what can be produced).
Technology is also a cultural activity that predates both science and engineering . It is a far-reaching term that includes both simple tools, such as a wooden spoon, and complex tools, such as the space station. Its scope includes any tool in any discipline. This is not to imply that technology is the only cultural forming activity, nor that it is the primary culture-forming activity. Often, it is dominate in cultural formation; often, it is not. In addition, culture may act to form technology. Due to widespread, and sometime careless, use of technology, several other topics arise in the study of technology, including technological ethics, environmental impacts, technological by-products, technological risk, among many other philosophical and sociological topics.

Husker engineering history: The Martin Company
The Glenn L. Martin Nebraska Company was a major contributor to America's World War II effort. The aircraft assembly plant, one of two in the U.S. operated by the Martin Company, produced more than 1500 B-26 Marauders between 1940 and 1945. The B-26 had the first aerodynamically perfect fuselage. The "Flying Torpedo," an early nickname, was the first (and last) Army bomber to use torpedoes in World War II. In 1945, the plant began producing the Boeing B-29 Superfortress. The Enola Gay, the B-29 Superfortress that dropped the first atomic bomb on August 6, 1945, was assembled at the Omaha plant. After the Omaha plant was shut down, the Martin Company donated thousands of dollars of manufacturing equipment to the technology program on the Omaha campus of what is now the UNL College of Engineering and Technology. Some of the Martin Shop equipment is still used by industrial systems technology students today. The Martin Company eventually abandoned aircraft production altogether but survived to become a large corporation, Martin-Marietta (now Lockheed Martin).

Engineering. From the Latin ingenerare, to create. Since 1914, engineers at Johns Hopkins have expanded the body of knowledge to its limits, creating new technologies to address the ever-changing demands of modern society. Yet Hopkins engineering actually had its beginning in the remarks of an inaugural address many years earlier.
In his 1876 speech as the University's first president, Daniel Coit Gilman expressed his hope that Johns Hopkins would initiate a technical curriculum that would be "more than a polytechnicum." As the 20th Century began, no technological institute existed in Baltimore or anywhere else in Maryland, and the state was losing hundreds of young men each year to out-of-state colleges and universities. In an attempt to reverse this trend, the Maryland legislature passed "The Technical Support Bill" in 1912, which allowed The Johns Hopkins University to create a department of "Applied Science and Technology."
Johns Hopkins welcomed the first class of engineering students in 1913. Among them was Abel Wolman, whose subsequent research and foresight in water resource management improved the lives of millions worldwide. At that time, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering formed the triad of disciplines available to aspiring engineers. The new program grew quickly, and in 1914, Maryland Hallthe first engineering building on the Homewood Campus opened its doors. The University awarded its first undergraduate engineering degrees in 1915.
