Understanding Understanding: Essays on Cybernetics and Cognition by Heinz von Foerster, published by Springer-Verlag 2003.

In these essays Heinz von Foerster discusses some of the fundamental principles that govern how we know the world and how we process the information from which we derive that knowledge.. edited by Claus Pias.
The Macy conferences mark the beginning of the discipline "cybernetics" to discuss "circular-causal and feedback mechanisms in biological and social systems." The book provides access to authors such as Wiener, McCulloch, Shannon, Mead, Bateson, Ashby

From the Web Dictionary of cybernetics and Systems.
http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/ASC/INFORMATION.html
P RINCIPIA C YBERNETICA ... EB
Parent Node(s):
INFORMATION
1) that which reduces uncertainty. (Claude Shannon); 2) that which changes us. (Gregory Bateson) Literally that which forms within, but more adequately: the equivalent of or the capacity of something to perform organizational work, the difference between two forms of organization or between two states of uncertainty before and after a message has been received, but also the degree to which one variable of a system depends on or is constrained by ( see constraint) another. E.g., the dna carries genetic information inasmuch as it organizes or controls the orderly growth of a living organism. A message carries information inasmuch as it conveys something not already known. The answer to a question carries information to the extent it reduces the questioner's uncertainty. A telephone line carries information only when the signals sent correlate with those received. Since information is linked to certain changes, differences or dependencies, it is desirable to refer to theme and distinguish between information stored, information carried, information transmitted, information required, etc. Pure and unqualified information is an unwarranted abstraction. information theory measures the quantities of all of these kinds of information in terms of bits.

Our Group Statutes Membership Information How to become member Application Form ... JOURNAL of SOCIOCYBERNETICS The Research Committee 51 (RC51) of the International Sociological Association (ISA) is one of the more than fifty Research Committees which, along with a large number of national sociological associations, constitute the ISA.
The group was founded in 1980 as an ISA Ad Hoc Group by Francisco Parra-Luna, who organized its sessions at subsequent World Congresses of Sociology (1982, 1986, 1990, 1994). The group became a Thematic Group and finally a Working Group of the ISA. In 1992 it was demoted back to Thematic Group for lack of activities. In 1995 it was reactivated under the leadership of Felix Geyer, and the first board was elected with Kenneth Bailey, USA, as president and Felix Geyer, The Netherlands, as secretary. The group was re-recognized by the ISA first as a Working Group and at the 1998 World Congress of Sociology in Montreal as a Research Committee. It grew from some 30 members in early 1995 to about 240 members at the time of the 1998 World Congress of Sociology in Brisbane. At that point about half of these members were also individual members of the parent association ISA.
RC51 offers to its members a biannual Newsletter which was started in 1996 and which has continued as part of the peer-reviewed electronic Journal of Sociocybernetics http://www.imprint.co.uk/

Aims and Scope
"Journal of Automata, Languages and Combinatorics" is a forum for research in all areas of the field, from theory to applications and relations to other subjects. Particular attention is given to grammatical methods for generation of sets of words, graphs, arrays, pictures, higher dimensional and infinite objects, etc. (including the classical grammars of the Chomsky hierarchy, Lindenmayer systems and their variations, graph grammars, etc.); automata as acceptors of languages of words, graphs, etc.; decision problems; efficient algorithms for solving problems concerning languages, grammars and automata; algebraic properties of automata and languages; combinatorial properties of words, sequences of words, sets of words, etc.; codes as languages; estimations of parameters of codes; relations of languages and automata to complexity theory, logics, etc.; trace languages; Petri net languages; formal models for concurrent processes; applications of formal languages and automata to programming languages, natural languages, biology, etc.; combinatorics, graph theory, discrete mathematics in relation with problems of theoretical computer science.

IAC - International Association for Cybernetics
The International Association for Cybernetics was incorporated at Namur, on January 6th, 1957. The idea to incorporating an International Association was born following to the 1st International Congress on Cybernetics held in 1956. Its tenth anniversary was commemorated in 1967 in presence of its Majesty the King of Belgium. Since 1971, it is recognized by the UNESCO as a nongovernmental organization of mutual information. Aims of the Association:
    • - to ensure a permanent and organized connection between researchers whose work in various countries is related to different sectors of Cybernetics,
    • - to promote the development of this science and of its technical applications as well as the dissemination of results obtained in this field.
The Association has developed and is still developing the following activities:
    • - Organization of international congresses on cybernetics and publication of the proceedings relevant to these congresses.
      • Since 1956, 14 congresses have been organized and all were held at Namur.
    • - Organization of colloquia, meetings and symposia dedicated to various subjects relating to Cybernetics or collaboration to the organization of similar manifestations.

    Speakers and Talks
Dear ACACSE Participant, We are pleased to inform you that we are accepting extended versions of papers which were presented at ACACSE'99 in Ixtapa, to be published by a prestigious publisher in a Book edited by Eduardo and Garret. This Book will be independent of the 2 Volumes of the Clifford Algebra Proceedings. We believe that such a Volume will be more attractive to the general audience of Scientists and Engineers who are interested in applying geometric algebra to specific problems in geometric computing, signal processing, image analysis, wavelets, interpolation and filtering, robotics, computer vision, neural and quantum computing and others. Papers must be of high quality and in LaTeX2e. Please submit all papers to Eduardo Bayro-Corrochano either by (i) email: edb@fractal.cimat.mx
