101. GMDH Method For Data Mining, Forecasting By PNN Algorithms, Fuzzy Models Analysi
Tutorials, software, online books and articles on forecasting and systems modeling, optimization in expert systems, pattern recognition, data mining and knowledge discovery, from a research group at the Glushkov Institute of cybernetics.
http://www.gmdh.net/index.html
Group Method of Data Handling * was applied in a great variety of areas for data mining and knowledge discovery, forecasting and systems modeling, optimization and pattern recognition. Inductive GMDH algorithms give possibility to find automatically interrelations in data, to select optimal structure of model or network and to increase the accuracy of existing algorithms.
This original self-organizing approach is substantially different from deductive methods used commonly for modeling. It has inductive nature - it finds the best solution by sorting-out of possible variants.
By sorting of different solutions GMDH networks aims to minimize the influence of the author on the results of modeling. Computer itself finds the structure of the model and the laws which act in the system.
Group Method of Data Handling is a set of several algorithms for different problems solution. It consists of parametric, clusterization, analogues complexing, rebinarization and probability algorithms. This inductive approach is based on sorting-out of gradually complicated models and selection of the best solution by minimum of external criterion characteristic. Not only polynomials but also non-linear, probabilistic functions or clusterizations are used as basic models.
GMDH approach can be useful because:
  • The optimal complexity of model structure is found, adequate to level of noise in data sample. For real problems solution with noised or short data, simplified forecasting models are more accurate.

Editorial board Consulting editors ... Thesaurus index Cybernetics and Human Knowing is a quarterly international multi- and interdisciplinary journal on second order cybernetics and cybersemiotics. The journal is devoted to the new understandings of self-organizing processes of information in human knowing that have arisen through the cybernetics of cybernetics, or second order cybernetics and its relation and relevance to other interdisciplinary approaches such as semiotics (cybersemiotics). This new development within cybernetics is a nondisciplinary approach. Through the concept of self-reference it tries to explore: the meaning of cognition and communication; our understanding of organization and information in human, artificial and natural systems; and our understanding of understanding within the natural and social sciences, humanities, information and library science, and in social practices as design, education, organisation, teaching, therapy, art, management and politics. The journal as such is an autonomous knowledge and communication system, partly affiliated with the American Society for Cybernetics but with editors from many other cybernetic and systems organizations and journals and interested researchers from semiotics. Because of the interdisciplinary character, articles are generally written in such a way that readers from other domains can understand them. Authors from a wide range of disciplines, whose common ground is a passion for interdisciplinary, cybernetic, and semiotic description and explanation, will write with a sensitivity for language that will make their ideas clear and their subject fascinating.

"The fact that we cannot telegraph the pattern of a man from one place to another seems to be due to technical difficulties, and in particular, to the difficulty of keeping an organism in being during such a radical reconstruction." "We have thus established the basis in man for the simplest element in his communication: namely, the communication of man with man by the immediate use of language, when two men are face to face with one another... this capacity is not intrinsically restricted to the immediate presense of the individual, for we have many means to carry this tool of communication to the ends of the earth."

"We need a program of PSYCHOSURGERY for POLITICAL CONTROL of our society. The purpose is PHISICAL CONTROL OF THE MIND. Everyone who deviates from the given norm can be SURGICALLY MUTILATED.
"The individual may think that the most important reality is his own existence, but this is only his personal point of view. This lacks historical perspective.
"Man does NOT HAVE THE RIGHT to develop his own mind. This kind of liberal orientation has great appeal. We must ELECTRICALLY CONTROL THE BRAIN. Some day armies and generals will be controlled by electric stimulation of the brain."

Ladies and Gentlemen: I am touched by the generosity of the organizers of this conference, who not only invited me to come to your glorious city of Paris, but also gave me the honor of opening the plenary sessions with my presentation. And I am impressed by the ingenuity of our organizers, who suggested to me the title of my presentation. They wanted me to address myself to "Ethics and Second-Order Cybernetics." To be honest, I would never have dared to propose such an outrageous title, but I must say that I am delighted that this title was chosen for me. Before I left California for Paris, others asked me, full of envy. "What am I going to do in Paris? What will I talk about?" When I answered "I shall talk about Ethics and Second-Order Cybernetics," almost all of them looked at me in bewilderment and asked "What is second-order cybernetics?" as if there were no questions about ethics. I am relieved when people ask me about second-order cybernetics and not about ethics, because it is so much easier to talk about second-order cybernetics than it is to talk about ethics. In fact, it is impossible to talk about ethics. But let me explain that later, and let me now say a few words about cybernetics, and, of course, about cybernetics of cybernetics, or second-order cybernetics.

Tools for Thought by Howard Rheingold April, 2000: a revised edition of Tools for Thought is available from MIT Press , including a revised chapter with 1999 interviews of Doug Engelbart, Bob Taylor, Alan Kay, Brenda Laurel, and Avron Barr. The idea that people could use computers to amplify thought and communication, as tools for intellectual work and social activity, was not an invention of the mainstream computer industry or orthodox computer science, nor even homebrew computerists; their work was rooted in older, equally eccentric, equally visionary, work. You can't really guess where mind-amplifying technology is going unless you understand where it came from.
