    INTRODUCTION
Cybernetics and Human Knowing is a quarterly international multi- and interdisciplinary journal on second order cybernetics, autopoiesis and cybersemiotics. The journal is devoted to the new understandings of self-organizing processes of information in human knowing that have arisen through the cybernetics of cybernetics, or second order cybernetics and its relation and relevance to other interdisciplinary approaches such as semiotics (cybersemiotics). This new development within cybernetics is a nondisciplinary approach. Through the concept of self-reference it tries to explore: the meaning of cognition and communication; our understanding of organization and information in human, artificial and natural systems; and our understanding of understanding within the natural and social sciences, humanities, information and library science, and in social practices as design, education, organisation, teaching, therapy, art, management and politics. The journal as such is an autonomous knowledge and communication system, partly affiliated with the American Society for Cybernetics but with editors from many other cybernetic and systems organizations and journals and interested researchers from semiotics. Because of the interdisciplinary character, articles are generally written in such a way that readers from other domains can understand them. Authors from a wide range of disciplines, whose common ground is a passion for interdisciplinary, cybernetic, and semiotic description and explanation, will write with a sensitivity for language that will make their ideas clear and their subject fascinating.

Ego Death and Self-Control Cybernetics Scholarly Priority of Discovery By reading this material, you are acknowledging you are aware of my claim to scholarly priority, summarized as follows. This theory of ego death is the first theory to combine the dissociative cognitive state, a philosophical theory of self-control, a model of experiencing determinism and transcending it, and a theory of myth and religion in terms of experiential metaphor. This theory is the first to systematically, explicitly, and non-metaphorically explain how the following four key areas are interconnected and have been interconnected, though much less clearly, throughout the history of religion and philosophy: dissociation, cybernetics, determinism, and metaphor These four areas were centrally present in this theory starting in 1987, and the content of this theory reached full, mature completion in 2005. The period 2001-2005 is fully recorded with dates at the Egodeath discussion group. Four domains of theory are key for constructing an adequate and relevant theory of transcendent experiential insight:
    • The dissociative cognitive state (includes entheogens).

Cybernetics - "the study of communication and control in the animal and the machine" (N.Wiener) - has recently returned to the forefront, not only in cyberspace and cyberpunk, but, even more important, contributing to the corroboration of various scientific theories. Additionally, an ever increasing number of research areas, including social and economic theories, theoretical biology, ecology, computer science, and robotics draw on ideas from second order cybernetics. Artificial intelligence, evolved directly from cybernetics, has not only technological and economic, but also important social impacts. With a marked trend towards interdisciplinary cooperation and global perspectives, this important role of cybernetics is expected to be further strengthened over the next years. Since 1972, the biennial European Meetings on Cybernetics and Systems Research (EMCSR) have served as a forum for discussion of converging ideas and new aspects of different scientific disciplines. As on previous occasions, a number of sessions providing wide coverage of the rapid developments will be arranged, complemented with daily plenary meetings, where eminent speakers will present latest research results.

"Compared to the analytical procedure of classical science with resolution into component elements and one-way or linear causality as basic category, the investigation of organized wholes of many variables requires new categories of interaction, transaction, organization, teleology..." Ludwig von Bertalanffy "This new development has unbounded possibilities for good and for evil." Norbert Wiener , Cybernetics, 1948
    Introduction
Many of the concepts used within the complexity sciences derive originally from work done in the mid 20th Century on Cybernetics (Wiener), based on the earlier work on Information Theory (Shannon), and General Systems Theory (von Bertalanffy). These ideas were all attempts to quantify in a rigorous way the treatment of systems as an interdisciplinary science. In other words they were a break from the old views that specialist subjects required specialist ideas. Additionally cybernetics is concerned with the control of systems, the issues of regulation and stability that also face us in the treatment of complex systems. Most recent work on cybernetics has related to mechanical systems (e.g. robots and bionics), but these ideas have always been more general and here we shall restate their relevance to biological and social situations.
    Systems
Systems are the lifeblood of complexity thinking and can be defined as a group of interacting parts functioning as a whole and distinguishable from its surroundings by recognizable boundaries. Systems have properties that are emergent, that are not intrinsically found within any of the component parts. They exist only at a higher level of description (e.g. an engine isn't a feature of valves, pistons, or any set of parts in isolation, they have to be suitably inter-connected).

He is also Director of the University KTP Centre, which links the University with Small to Medium Enterprises and raises over £2Million each year in research income for the University. Kevin was born in Coventry, UK and left school to join British Telecom, at the age of 16. At 22 he took his first degree at Aston University, followed by a PhD and a research post at Imperial College, London. He subsequently held positions at Oxford, Newcastle and Warwick universities before being offered the Chair at Reading, at the age of 33. He has been awarded higher doctorates (DScs) both by Imperial College and the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague. He was presented with The Future of Health technology Award from MIT (USA), was made an Honorary Member of the Academy of Sciences, St.Petersburg and received The IEE Achievement Medal in 2004. In 2000 Kevin presented the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures, entitled “The Rise of The Robots”. Kevin has carried out a series of pioneering experiments involving the neuro-surgical implantation of a device into the median nerves of his left arm in order to link his nervous system directly to a computer in order to assess the latest technology for use with the disabled. He has been successful with the first extra-sensory (ultrasonic) input for a human and with the first purely electronic communication experiment between the nervous systems of two humans. His research has been discussed by the US White House Presidential Council on BioEthics, The European Commission FTP and has led to him being widely referenced and featured in academic circles as well as appearing as cover stories in several magazines – e.g.Wired (USA), The Week (India).

    Definitions of Cybernetics
There are many definitions of cybernetics and many individuals who have influenced Cybernetics takes as its domain the design or discovery and application of principles of regulation and communication. Cybernetics treats not things but ways of behaving. It does not ask "what is this thing?" but "what does it do?" and "what can it do?" Because numerous systems in the living, social and technological world may be understood in this way, cybernetics cuts across many traditional disciplinary boundaries. The concepts which cyberneticians develop thus form a metadisciplinary language by which we may better understand and modify our world.
