Proposal for a Strategic University Program
in Computational Science and Engineering at NTNU
1 Background
1.1 What is Computational Science and Engineering?
Advanced computation and simulation in science and engineering constitute an important area in rapid growth in many leading industrial nations. The background for this is the continuing development of efficient computer hardware that has been seen over the past few decades which in turn has imposed an exceptional activity in the progress of vector and parallel computing, numerical algorithms and visualization. The consequence is that new vistas have been opened for realistic computer simulations of mathematical models in engineering and science. We will here use the term Computational Science and Engineering or CSE for those activities in science and engineering where computers play a significant role. The importance of CSE has been realized in many countries like USA, Japan, Australia and several European countries. A variety of research programs have been initiated and funded within the fields of high performance computing and its applications, algorithm design, and scientific visualization.

Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences Established at the University of Texas at Austin
A new institute to provide the intellectual leadership and infrastructure for conducting world-class interdisciplinary research in the fields of computational science, engineering, and technology has been created at The University of Texas at Austin, which is both an NPACI Resources Partner and a partner in the Engineering Thrust Area. The Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES) was made possible by a $38 million investment, $15 million from an anonymous donor, $8 million from industrial partners and $15 million in university matching funds, says Larry R. Faulkner, president of The University of Texas at Austin. The industrial partners are Dell Computer Corporation, Cray, Incorporated, IBM, Force10 Networks, Microsoft, Nortel, Platform Computing, StorageTek Computing, Sun, TeraBurst, MirraCom Inc., and United Devices. "Computational engineering and technology are arenas that will affect virtually every aspect of our lives in the 21st century," Faulkner said. "The technological advancement of our state and nation hinges on these critical fields of endeavor."
