Directorate conducting multidisciplinary bioscience research. Provides overviewof programs, research initiatives, and funding sources.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Biosciences Directorate Biosciences Directorate Overview Links Bioscience research was initiated at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in 1963. Since that time, the program has undergone a dramatic evolution in scope evolving from its initial mission of characterizing the biological consequences of ionizing radiation to a modern day program in molecular biology, genetics, genomics, computational biology, and biotechnology. These efforts seek to bring National Laboratory strengths to bear in the service of three main areas of societal need: human health, defense biology, and environmental health. Environmental health research, currently receiving our primary investment emphasis, is directed to the goals and strategies of DOE's 'Genomes to Life' initiative. Our primary focus is on understanding the reciprocal interactions between the metabolic activities of environmental microbial communities and the properties of the environment in which they live.
The Biosciences Directorate website is undergoing a major redesign. Check back soon, as the interim website will be updated frequently.

THE WIRED SOCIETY
Within a few centuries, it will be technically if not ideologically feasible to abolish suffering of any kind. If we wish to do so, then genetic engineering and nanotechnology can be used to banish unpleasant modes of consciousness from the living world . In their place, gradients of life-long, genetically pre-programmed well-being may animate our descendants instead. Millennia if not centuries hence, the world's last aversive experience may even be a precisely dateable event: perhaps a minor pain in an obscure marine invertebrate. Far-fetched? Right now, the abolitionist project sounds fanciful. The task of redesigning our legacy-wetware still seems daunting. Rewriting the vertebrate genome, and re-engineering the global ecosystem, certainly pose immense scientific challenges even to a technologically advanced civilisation. The ideological obstacles to a happy world, however, are more formidable still. For we've learned how to rationalise the need for
