Workshop Background
The application of multiple-valued logic (MVL) to (i) reasoning, and to (ii) learning, represents a slowly-burgeoning area of research work. This workshop aims at significantly strengthening these applications of MVL. We are aiming at enhancing the role of MVL in data mining and in artificial intelligence. A range of speakers will deal with theoretical aspects of MVL, and applications to reasoning (in artificial intelligence) and to learning (in data mining). Clustering and classification are at the core of many of these methods and applications. The opening morning session will consist of tutorials, aimed at PhD research students and young researchers.

UGAMAIL My UGa UGa Libraries UGa News ... CNET News Using computers to model and extend the human mind... The University of Georgia has always seen cognitive science as an interdisciplinary field where computer science intersects with philosophy psychology linguistics engineering , and other fields. This comprises both classical artificial intelligence , which focuses on getting computers to behave intelligently, and newer approaches to cognitive computing , where the computer is seen as an extension rather than a model of the human mind. The Artificial Intelligence Center is an interdepartmental research and instructional center within the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Georgia Strengths include logic programming, expert systems, neural nets, genetic algorithms, natural language processing, and computational psycholinguistics. The Artificial Intelligence Center houses two degree programs, the Master of Science program in Artificial Intelligence and the bachelor's degree program in Cognitive Science.

1. Introduction
As a researcher in computer science and artificial intelligence (AI) for over twenty years, I am known for my work on a variety of automated planning systems [Georgeff+Lansky1, Georgeff+Lansky2, Lansky1, Lansky2]. For instance, I have built artificial agents that "perceive", reason about their environment and about their own "beliefs", and take actions as a result. Despite, or perhaps because of my expertise in this area, I find myself alarmed by the emerging trend in the consciousness community to equate consciousness with simple awareness, or even with more complex forms of reasoning and action based on awareness. The natural result of this equation will be to find computers capable of consciousness or, perhaps even worse, to view humans as complex machines [Dennett]. Interestingly, just as my work as a computer scientist became more and more practical, my inner life became increasingly metaphysical. Over the years, I have come to believe that much more exists than meets our limited awareness; the universe is not the mundane three-dimensional mechanistic place that it appears to be. Indeed, I believe it is filled with energy fields and forces we have yet to measure. It is through an examination of human interaction with these energies that, I believe, humanity will ultimately expand its understanding of consciousness. The primary goal of this paper is to describe what I believe we may find in these explorations:

  • These are my own ideas on the topic, based on the article Subcognition and the Limits of the Turing Test by Robert M. French. AI is not my field of study, and the article was written almost 10 years ago (when I was still a student).)
    1. Introduction
Although there is no clear definition of AI (not even of intelligence), it can be described as the attempt to build machines that think and act like humans, that are able to learn and to use their knowledge to solve problems on their own. A 'by-product' of the intensive studies of the human brain by AI researchers is a far better understanding of how it works. The human brain consists of 10 to 100 billion neurons, each of which is connected to between 10 and 10,000 others through synapses. The single brain cell is comparatively slow (compared to a microprocessor) and has a very simple function: building the sum of its inputs and issuing an output, if that sum exceeds a certain value. Through its highly parallel way of operation, however, the human brain achieves a performance that has not been reached by computers yet; and even at the current speed of development in that field, we still have about twenty years until the first supercomputers will be of equal power.

    • Description: Since 1985, the Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence (UAI) has been the primary international forum for presenting new results on the use of principled methods for reasoning under uncertainty within intelligent systems. The scope of UAI is wide, including, but not limited to, representation, automated reasoning, learning, decision making and knowledge acquisition under uncertainty. We encourage submissions of papers to UAI-2005 that report on advances in these core areas, as well as those dealing with insights derived from the construction and use of applications involving uncertain reasoning.
The UAI conference will be held just prior to IJCAI 2005 in Edinburgh The UAI conference series is organized by the Association for Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence . [This is a slightly revised version of a paper published in Cognitive, Emotive and Ethical Aspects of Decision Making in Humans and in Artificial Intelligence , Vol. 2, ed. I. Smit et al., Int. Institute of Advanced Studies in Systems Research and Cybernetics, 2003, pp. 12-17]
ABSTRACT KEYWORDS: Artificial intelligence, ethics, uploading, superintelligence, global security, cost-benefit analysis
    1. INTRODUCTION A superintelligence is any intellect that is vastly outperforms the best human brains in practically every field, including scientific creativity, general wisdom, and social skills. This definition leaves open how the superintelligence is implemented – it could be in a digital computer, an ensemble of networked computers, cultured cortical tissue, or something else. On this definition, Deep Blue is not a superintelligence, since it is only smart within one narrow domain (chess), and even there it is not vastly superior to the best humans. Entities such as corporations or the scientific community are not superintelligences either. Although they can perform a number of intellectual feats of which no individual human is capable, they are not sufficiently integrated to count as “intellects”, and there are many fields in which they perform much worse than single humans. For example, you cannot have a real-time conversation with “the scientific community”.
