The Multi-Agent Systems Lab The Multi-Agent Systems Laboratory, under the direction of Professor Victor Lesser , is concerned with the development and analysis of sophisticated AI problem-solving and control architectures for both single-agent and multiple-agent systems. The laboratory has pioneered work in the development of the blackboard architecture, approximate processing for use in control and real-time AI, and a wide variety of techniques for the coordination of and negotiation between multiple agents. The MAS Laboratory is part of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Negotiation and Coordination

105. Holism
Argues against the idea that research in AI supposes meaning holism, and against classifying Wittgenstein as a meaning holist. By Carlo Penco.

  • (longer version of a paper published in Philosophy of Science in Florence edited by M.L.Dalla Chiara, R. Giuntini, L. Laudisa, forthcoming - Acts of The tenth International Congress of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science, Florence, August 1995] . In the discussion on semantic holism it has been claimed that A.I. is almost entirely holistic. In this paper I show that some of the main lines of research in symbolic artificial intelligence are not holistic; I will consider three classical cases: toy words, frames and contextual reasoning. I claim that these examples from A.I. can be interpreted as implementing molecularist intuitions about language. Eventually I suggest that some assumptions behind the discussion on holism should be re-interpreted, expecially the usual references to Frege and Wittgenstein.[1] 0. The Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel , or short VUB AI-Lab, was founded in 1983 by Luc Steels and is part of the Computer Science Department Over the years, more than hundred researchers have worked at the laboratory. They have built a large number of artificial systems to investigate aspects of intelligence: knowledge systems, autonomous robots, machine learning systems, natural language processing components, design and implementation tools. See our publications

Artificial Intelligence - Outline "Artificial Intelligence is a branch of Science which deals with helping machines find solutions to complex problems in a more human-like fashion. This generally involves borrowing characteristics from human intelligence, and applying them as algorithms in a computer friendly way. A more or less flexible or efficient approach can be taken depending on the requirements established, which influences how artificial the intelligent behaviour appears.." E.T. SHOULD NEVER HAD MET HAL...
a movie review by Luc-Rock Paquin Two things went through my mind as I exited the movie theatre today. One: There is no way that this is a Steven Spielberg film. Two: I have just wasted two and a half hours of my life to watch what has to be one of the worst movies of the year. Stanley Kubrick ( 2001: A Space Odyssey A Clockwork Orange The Shining ) began developing A.I. back in 1983, but, just before his death, asked his friend Spielberg ( Schindler's List Raiders of the Lost Ark Saving Private Ryan ) to take over the direction. Spielberg wanted this film to be a tribute to Kubrick, which partly explains why A.I. doesn't have the Spielberg "magic touch", but it does not explain why it is so awful. I have enjoyed most of Kubrick's work, including 1999's controversial Eyes Wide Shut , but Spielberg's A.I. hardly respects Kubrick's style, although it does fit the dehumanization theme found in many of his movies. real feelings, such as love. This innovation will force David to face many obstacles in his journey to be accepted as he sees himself: a
