Scope and intentions
According to the very earliest surviving work on the subject, Vitruvius De Architectura , good buildings should have Beauty (Venustas), Firmness (Firmitas) and Utility (Utilitas); architecture can be said to be a balance and coordination among these three elements, with none overpowering the others. A modern day definition sees architecture as addressing aesthetic, structural and functional considerations. However, looked at another way, function itself is seen as encompassing all criteria, including aesthetic and psychological ones. Architecture is a multi-disciplinary field, including within its fold

Finnish Architecture in the 1990s
Written for Virtual Finland by Frank Hellstén "The arts have always been held in high esteem in Finland, with music and architecture being particularly well known internationally. At its best, architecture, too, is music - frozen music, as the often quoted but apposite definition defines it. Architecture, built culture, forms the framework for our lives; future generations will pass judgement on us, on the basis of our architecture, as we pass judgement on our predecessors. The task of architectural photography is to record and pass on this most visible part of our culture." This is how architect Gunnel Adlercreutz, Director General of the Building Information Institute, introduces architectural photographer Jussi Tiainen's second book on new Finnish architecture (Finnish Architecture 1994-1999, ISBN 951-682-562-1, The Finnish Building Centre). Like its predecessor, (New Finnish Architecture, ISBN 951-682-407-2) the new book consists of photographs that represent the best in Finnish architecture of the 1990s. Photographer Jussi Tiainen (born 1954) took his first architectural photographs in 1975. During the last ten years his work has been concentrated on modern Finnish architecture.

Major attractions of Russia
  • Moscow Architecture , XIII-XIX centuries
  • Baroque Architecture of St. Petersburg The inimitable beauty of St. Peterburg's architectural ensembles and squares was extolled by many poets. The city dates its existence from May 16 (27, New Style), 1703, when the cornerstone of the Peter and Paul Fortress was laid...
  • Kizhi - The Museum of Wooden Architecture in Karelia. Archaeological finds and petroglyphs bear witness that this land was first settled in the sixth and fifth millennia BC. The rock drawings, the handiwork of the primitive hunter, comprise a whole gallery of mystic signs and representations of beasts and birds. Barely discernible in broad daylight, these sharply but callously incised silhouettes are thrown into bold relief at sunup and sundown; transforming as the sun rises or dips, they seem to appear out of nothingness and are then gone as if they never existed...
  • The Trinity-St. Sergiy Lavra . The unique architectural complex of the monastery was built over six centuries. It contains magnificent relics of different stages of Russian architecture. The Trinity-St. Sergiy Lavra is famous all over the world for its artistic uniqueness and its distinctive appearance.
  • Palekh . The unbelievably colorful art of Palekh is known in all countries of the world. The elegant black-lacquered art pieces on which the heroes of Russian folklore come to life - the amazing fire-birds and the gold-manned troikas subjugate us with a fantastic world of beauty, movement and harmony of their color chords...
