Bleacher seats for $5 are sold on game days only. Good field-level seats, called "terrace infield box," are $36 each. Favorite cheap seats: The Sun/Moon Deck in right field. Between innings, you can look out at the Ohio River from the elevated esplanade. $19 each. Look for: The Rose Garden, on the back side of the park on the right-field side. JOHANNESBURG is the sports capital of southern Africa, with six major stadiums, of which four have the facilities to host the biggest international events. Two World Cup finals have been played in Johannesburg (rugby in 1995 and cricket in 2003), and a third, the soccer World Cup, will be played here in 2010. Johannesburg also hosted the All Africa Games in 1999.

The towering stadium was the country's most modern when it was upgraded in 1982 to accommodate almost 50 000 people. Today the stadium hosts both soccer and rugby, and is also used as a venue for other large events, such as open-air concerts. League, provincial and international fixtures are regularly played here, and the grounds have seen such famous teams as Manchester United and Arsenal. Ellis Park is the centrepiece of a sporting sector on the south-east of the city, where its neighbours are the Johannesburg Stadium (athletics), Standard Bank Stadium (tennis), and an Olympics-class swimming pool. Ellis Park will host one of the semi-finals of the 2010 soccer World Cup, for which its capacity will be upgraded by another 10 000 seats. New upper tiers will be added behind each of the goals, to the north and south of the stadium.

    Robot cops for German stadiums?
09:23 AM robots The 1.20 meters (almost four feet) "OFRO+detect" could soon be employed to protect next year's World Cup in Germany by hindering potential terrorist attacks. Developed by Berlin-based company Robowatch Technologies , OFRO can take over dangerous, and tedious, duties such as checking for atomic, biological and chemical, or ABC, weapons. During its 12 hours of operation time, OFRO can cover 10,000 square meters at a speed of five kilometers (3.1 miles) per hour, using its thermal camera and sensors to detect possible terror hazards. The robot wirelessly transmits the information collected at a central location. It also takes air samples and should there be irregularities, it sounds an alarm. Nothing can get in OFRO's way and it can steer through fan crowds all by itself. The Robowatch Technologies management are still waiting to hear from security officials if OFRO will actually be needed in the stadiums. Via Deutsche Welle Regine

July 24, 2005 Park Downsizing The Oakland Athletics are interested in building a small baseball stadium , partly to increase season ticket sales: The A's managing general partner is looking for a park so intimate it would make SBC Park or even Fenway Park look almost spacious. It would have about 35,000 seats, Wolff said last week, and that would make it the smallest big-league park. "Right now our capacity (at McAfee Coliseum, 43,662) is too big, and it makes it too hard to sell season tickets,'' Wolff said. "That's why we have the highest walk-up traffic in major league baseball.'' Even some of the luxury suites would be cozy. Half of them 40 of the 80 would be 4-to-6-seat mini-suites, club officials say. That would make them more affordable, a necessity for a club that can't begin to attract the level of corporate support the Giants enjoy. It's not a bad idea. And it seems you could build the park in such a way that if it proves to be too small, it could be expanded.

    Scala - Key Markets
    Stadiums and Arenas
When you are controlling multi-million dollar LED billboards, the last thing you want is an old character generator or antiquated rolling stock. Scala provides the most amazing digital content that can be scheduled or updated on-the-fly.
Case Study: Rugby World Cup (Stadium Signage)
The Rugby World Cup's sports presentation group wanted a system to integrate live statistics and scores provided by Unisys, as well as referee penalty explanations, live to each of the 10 stadiums across the continent. They chose InfoChannel for its ability to integrate with external data sources and be centrally controlled and coordinated. Scala software was also the perfect choice to match the same look and feel of the broadcast graphics with its real-time rendering of visual effects.
Case Study: Royal Easter Show (Event Signage)
Every year the Royal Easter Show brings together everything that is Australian, from agriculture to entertainment, into one huge exhibition. To inform and direct almost 900,000 people over a two-week period, show organizers needed a flexible platform to maintain the messaging on their larger than life digital billboards and Scala's InfoChannel software suite exceeded their expectations.
Case Study: Portland Rose Garden Arena (Arena Menus)
When the circus rolls into town, the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon is ready. Beyond the obvious physical changes that need to be made to the Arena, each event's clientele demands different food options and, of course, there is no beer on the menu at family events.

Squeeze Play: Do Baseball Stadiums Need Our Bucks to Get Built?
by Raymond J. Keating Raymond Keating is the author of Sports Pork: The Costly Relationship between Major League Sports and Government a policy analysis from the Cato Institute. He is chief economist for the Small Business Survival Committee, a weekly columnist for Newsday in New York, and a partner with Capitol Hill Research, a political and economic analysis service. Baseball's Opening Day offers a delightful mix of nostalgia for seasons past, and optimism for the coming year. But for taxpayers, the first game of the season is also a pretty good time to ponder ever-larger government handouts to millionaire team owners and players.

    Sensational sports stadiums
Brad Morgan 20 May 2004 South Africa's world-class sports stadiums have hosted a number of massive sporting events. For cricket there was the World Cup in 2003; for rugby there was the World Cup in 1995; for soccer there was the African Cup of Nations in 1996; for athletics there was the World Cup in 1998. Some of the country's stadiums rate among the best in the world. The Wanderers Cricket Stadium, for instance, seats just 28 000, but is known as the Bull Ring because of its electric atmosphere. No less an authority than Brian Lara, after a thrilling one-day international between the West Indies and South Africa in February 2004, reckoned it was one of the finest theatres in which he had ever played. Then there's Newlands, regarded by many as the most picturesque Test cricket venue in the world. Cape Town's famous Table Mountain stares down on the ground, and clouds rolling over the top of the mountain make for a stunning backdrop. The crowds at Newlands are also famously enthusiastic, and it has become a venue of choice for New Year's Tests.
