Leahy Named USGS Acting Director
Most will agree these are busy times at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). There is change everywhere – regionalization organization-wide, and transformation in the NGPO but most recently Dr. P. Patrick Leahy was named acting director when Dr. Charles G. Groat announced his resignation, effective June 17, 2005. Recently, Leahy met with Secretary Norton and she outlined her priorities for the USGS, which included implementation of the planned restructuring of USGS Regional Executive responsibilities from single discipline oversight to all disciplines within a sub-region. Other topics of discussion included the significant challenges faced by USGS as it continues to transform itself. “Although, there are still many questions about the process yet to be answered,” said Leahy, “restructuring will position senior USGS leaders to engage more effectively at the customer level. “Our customers have asked us to simplify access to our science and technology, and we will serve them the full breadth of our science capabilities through a single point of contact.”

The sale of sports games is indeed good for the sport. My personal football interest as well as my football video game interest have definately fed off of each other and grown stronger as a result.
But more to the premise of the article, non-sports games are taking up the entertainment time of potential sports fans. If someone is playing GTA or a MMO for 8 hours a day, they're doing that at the expense of watching a baseball or basketball or whatever game. If there is growth in the video game industry, some of that growth will have to come at the expense of other forms of entertainment. Maybe the RIAA's decline in music sales is in part because people are gaming and not dancing.

The old Tiger roars
but not in ratings Not a good omen for ABC's 'Battle at the Bridges' By Toni Fitzgerald Yes, Tiger Woods is back. He’s already won two majors this year and has a good shot at a third, and sports pages across the country are once more singing his praises.
So you would think, after three years of mediocre Tiger, that Woods’ wins would have sent golf ratings soaring back to their 2000 levels. In fact, they’re not even close. Woods may be back but many of his fans have moved on, and don’t expect them to come out of hiding tonight when ABC airs its seventh annual primetime golf showdown starring Woods.
“The Lincoln Financial Battle at the Bridges” has been declining since 2000, the year that Woods won three Grand Slams. Last year’s event averaged a 3.6 household rating, its worst ever and down 53 percent from its 2000 peak.
It might seem that Woods’ British Open and Masters wins would spur attention for this year’s faceoff, but in fact his victories have done surprisingly little for the Grand Slams this year.

What's really hot
this week, NFL Draft Ratings will easily outpace NBA playoffs games By Toni Fitzgerald The NBA playoffs begin this weekend on TNT and ESPN. But they won’t be the most-watched sporting event of the weekend on cable.
No, that honor will belong to the much lower-profile NFL Draft. As more and more underclassmen leave school early, and fantasy sports dependent on new talent grow increasingly popular, the NFL Draft has become one of ESPN’s biggest non-“Sunday Night Football” draws of the year.
The draft is the ultimate fantasy football nut couch potato event. The first day of last year’s draft, going from noon to 7 p.m., averaged a 3.8 household rating, third highest in ESPN history behind a 4.2 in 1993 and a 3.9 in 1991.
More impressively, it more than tripled the average rating for TNT’s first-round playoff game between the Miami Heat and Charlotte Hornets airing directly opposite at 1 p.m.
The first day of last year’s draft peaked at a 4.9 at 1 p.m., when the first round was still going on.

NFL NCAA Football MLB NHL ... Week 20 NFL Football Ratings (Conference) Welcome to the Home of the Cook Ratings! The Cook Ratings are power ratings for NFL football. The ratings are calculated based on the performance of each team with an emphasis placed on their strength of schedule. Each team's 2002 performance was factored into the calculation through the first 4 weeks of the season. Each week all 32 teams in the NFL will be ranked from top to bottom and also sorted by conference or division. The team's strength of schedule will also be ranked from hardest to easiest and also sorted by conference or division. The rating calculated for each team gives the strength of one team compared to another. Sagarin Rothman Billingsley Matthews ...
