Psychology and Sports
Sometimes a student athlete has turned to drugs to cope with the pressures of sport. Without really considering what a powerful influence the positive mind can be in successful performance, were these individuals unknowingly depriving themselves of an opportunity to reach much higher levels of ability? Many young collegiate athletes have gained tremendous advantage from learning mental techniques appropriate for their sport. The two stories below are true accounts of two very talented student athletes who turned disappointment into success by training themselves to think differently.
Sports Psychology: Student Examples
MILT
It was not long before Milt went out and broke a college record for scoring three point baskets in one game. His team went on to win the NCAA basketball championship that year. CHRIS
Chris was a young wrestler who knew that he was talented and able to beat many of the opponents who beat him. He thought: "if only I could find a way to focus and maintain concentration during the later part of the bouts." Chris learned about "focusing his mind" in one of his university classes and started to practice "mental focusing and positive self-talk." Later that year he placed third in the NCAA wrestling championships.

65. SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY
SPORT PSYCHOLOGY. — by Dr. Saul L. Miller Dr. Saul Miller, the man who makesthings happen, is a world renowned sports psychologist who has assisted
http://www.fieldhockey.org/Articles/SportsScience/SportsPsychology.htm
SPORT PSYCHOLOGY At the elite level preparation for winning field hockey focuses on the physical aspects of the game. Drills are designed to improve conditioning and physical skills like stick handling, passing, shooting and marking the opposition. Mental skills like focus and emotional control are relatively neglected. When people do get around to talking about the mental game it is usually in terms of qualities like pride, character, and confidence, with little awareness of what they can actually do to develop these qualities.
In this state of ease and relaxation imagine yourself in a game situation. Imagine the scene in slow motion (three quarter speed.) Visualize yourself on offence doing exactly what you want to be doing. When your team has the ball imagine yourself running into space, receiving a pass, handling the ball with control, making good crisp passes "on the stick" and shooting with quickness and accuracy. Imagine yourself playing effective defence: head up, stick on the turf, marking your man, playing your angles, anticipating the play, reacting quickly with speed and balance, "like a big cat."
Improving your physical game is similar to improving your physical skills in that repetition builds strength. It takes practice. By practicing your breathing and relaxation skills, defining what you want to do on offence and defence, and then imagining yourself executing well, you will strengthen the mental traces of high performance and actually increase the probability well and the quality of your play. Remember, the mind is like a t.v., it is your t.v. and you control the switch. So take a breath, see yourself making the play, and do it.

Use Sports Psychology
To Prep for Interviews
By D ON E RICKSON In athletic as well as corporate careers, possessing sufficient talent, skills and training is sometimes only half the battle. Success often belongs to those who gain a psychological advantage. Over the years, professional athletes and their coaches and trainers have developed several psychological techniques to hone this mental edge. These include preparation, mental rehearsal, affirmation, expecting success and "self-talk." Job hunters can draw on some or all of these techniques in interviews to help score extra points that will win the job. Preparation Preparation is integral to both athletic contests and job interviews. It provides the means to excel and the psychological edge that spawns confidence. Consider the experience of Buddy Melges, who sailed America3 to victory in the 1992 America's Cup. In "Sailing Smart: Winning Techniques, Tactics and Strategies" (1983, Henry Holt and Co.), Mr. Melges attributes his success to intense preparation. His groundwork encompasses all aspects of planning from the layout of deck hardware and rigging to perfecting "on water" drills in tacking, jibing and rounding marks. On the day of the race, he memorizes the numbers of competitors' boats so he can identify them on the course. During the race, he's free to concentrate on the wind, waves and strategy rather than his crew and rigging.

The emotional response to risk Psychoanalytic theory Evolutionary perspectives ... David J. Llewellyn Welcome to Risktaking.co.uk - a website which provides an introduction to the psychology of risk taking for general readers, and specialised support for psychologists. Introduction - Risk taking behaviours such as rock climbing, gambling and drug taking represent one of the most perplexing problems in the field of psychology. The need for safety is fundamental, are people who take huge risks therefore illogical or mentally ill? Recent research findings shed an altogether different perspective on these behaviours however, and it seems that normal people are motivated to take risks as a result of their psychological makeup and the nature of the situation they find themselves in. Psychological profiles The degree to which all risk taking behaviours can be categorised by a universal "risk taking personality" remains controversial. Many contemporary researchers now adopt more sophisticated multidimensional models of risk taking personality which stress both the similarities and differences across risk taking domains.

80. Don't Panic Yet...
Some information from a study about panic among divers, and related issues, by Dr. William Morgan, director of the Sport psychology Laboratory at the University of WisconsinMadison and the principal author of the study.
http://whyfiles.org/sports/scuba/
I'm Afraid We Must Talk About...
A silent, serene paradise that's the usual picture of the watery world of scuba diving. But is there terror in paradise?
Yes, according to a new study that suggests episodes of panic or near-panic may explain many recreational diving accidents and deaths. In a national survey, more than half of divers reported experiencing at least one panic or near-panic behavior, says William Morgan , director of the Sport Psychology Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the principal author of the study. image courtesy of UW Sea Grant Institute, photo credit UW-Madison News Service. The panic attack was often spurred by something that a non-diver would deem serious entanglement, an equipment malfunction or the sight of a shark. But the attacks don't make things better, Morgan says they can lead to irrational and dangerous behavior. If divers and instructors knew more about the phenomenon, Morgan adds, they could screen out people who might be susceptible to life-threatening panic attacks. What to learn more about panic underwater?
