During this time, a skater must land every jump, nail every lift, or perform every bit of footwork with complete precision. There are no time outs, no second chances. I dare anyone to say that figure skaters aren't under a lot of pressure. It's true that ninety percent of any sport is mental. Your mind is what controls your body, and if your body is prepared but your mind is not, well, the results will probably not be what you hoped for. The key to skating a good program is good, strong mental focus and self-confidence. One good idea is to have some sort of set routine for the day of competition. Check screws to make sure they are tight enough, check laces to make sure they are not broken (or in immediate danger of breaking), check costume ahead of time in case it needs some last minute repairs, etc. This way, you will know ahead of time that your equipment will not hinder your performance. It's okay to have a few "superstitions" as well, as long as you don't let it get too out of hand. (In other words, understand that there is a fine line between following a routine and being "obsessive compulsive" about it. The routine is supposed to help calm nerves, but this doesn't mean that all is lost if you cannot follow the routine exactly.)

Your mind can help your body work
Once upon a time more recently than we'd like to admit mind and body were separate. Psychologists studied one and physicians studied the other. But in the past decade or two, information on the fiendishly complex linkages between mind and body have emerged from research labs. Social support influences cancer survival. Nutrition affects concentration. Attitude affects susceptibility to disease. You can document this with cold, impersonal numbers. And attitude and alertness affect athletic performance
This simple finding explains the moment of concentration you see before a diver walks out onto the board, that inward look while a gymnast psychs herself up for a floor routine. What's going on in these moments of supreme concentration, as the athlete prepares a performance that could make or break a career? Concentration, mental mapping of the upcoming event, and relaxation. Seriously? Can anybody talk about relaxation when a gold medal is at stake? Yes, argues Richard Gordin, a professor of health, physical education and recreation at Utah State University. And it's not just Olympic-caliber athletes who could benefit from mental training. The discipline "could apply to recreational athletes as well," Gordin says. Indeed, he adds, sports psychology should be called "performance psychology," since its tenets are equally applicable to any endeavor requiring extreme concentration and effort. Gordin says he's taught this five-step plan, developed by Canadian sports psychologist Terry Orlick, to surgeons and actors as well as gymnasts and fencers:

    53. Competitive Advantage: Sports Psychology And Mental Toughness
Welcome to Dr. Alan Goldberg’s Competitive Advantage, you re online source forthe latest and most effective sports psychology and mental toughness ideas,

    Quote Archives
"Dr. Alan Goldberg is a nationally known expert in the field of applied sports psychology and the former sports psychology consultant for all of the teams at the
    University of Connecticut."

Even the fastest, strongest, smartest and most skilled will underachieve if they concentrate on the wrong things, are unable to quickly let go of mistakes or bad breaks, lack self-confidence or can't handle the pressure of competition. If you leave the mental side of performance to chance, then you're more vulnerable to performance problems like excessive nervousness, psych-outs, choking, slumps and blocks. To be more consistently successful you have to learn to harness the power of sports psychology to help you think like a winner and develop mental toughness. What is mental toughness? In sports psychology, mental toughness is a combination of learned skills that will help you raise the level of your training and competitive performance:
    These include:
    • Goal Setting Stress Management Self-Confidence “Reboundability” Winning Concentration
As a coach, a working knowledge of sports psychology techniques will help you become more effective and therefore much more successful with your athletes. Knowing how to get the most out of your players at “crunch time” and how to avoid the mental traps that far too many coaches fall into will enhance your technical skills as a coach and give you the competitive advantage. Train your athletes to use mental toughness skills and they'll regularly compete to their potential.

Hypnosis and Sports Psychology As one visualizes for example, the perfect back swing, all of the muscles needed to make it perfect, every muscle needed to accomplish it moves imperceptibly in the correct way. With continued practice, these same perfected movements are easily transferred to the golf course, baseball diamond, or in lifting weights to the field or competition. Athletes from children's and community or corporate teams to professionals are finding and using hypnosis to improve their performance. Three of the major factors which make this possible are the ability to improve focus and concentration, to relieve unnecessary stress while leaving sufficient "edge" to perform optimally, and to practice through visualization all of the moves needed to make the desired improvements to perform better.

Sports Psychology - the will to win How important is psychological training to your performance? If you have any doubts at all, please read on (with, I hope, an open mind). I am about to demonstrate why psychological preparation is as crucial to success as training, recovery, kit, hydration and nutrition. If you already recognise the importance of psychological training, we have a special offer that will interest you.
Do you put up psychological barriers to success? Whether you like the idea or not, most of us put up psychological barriers that interfere with our performance and enjoyment of our sport or event. The four-minute mile was the classic example of a psychological barrier. Runners were consistently achieving times of 4:03, 4:02 and 4:01, but no one could apparently run under four minutes. This led to a common perception that running a mile in less than four minutes was physically impossible. Almost everyone believed it. Did these athletes suddenly get faster and train harder? No: the floodgates opened because Bannister had breached the psychological barrier and demonstrated what was possible. Athletes were no longer limited by their beliefs.

SCIENCE FRIDAY... Science Friday Archives August Hour Two: Sport Psychology The 2000 summer Olympics kick off next month in Sydney, Australia, and this summer Olympic hopefuls are competing for a place on the American team. It's a good bet that those athletes are at least a little faster, stronger, or has more endurance than Mr. Joe Average. But are there psychological differences that help separate these exceptional athletes from the rest of us, beyond better reflexes and faster reaction times? Talk to an athlete about their sport, and you're likely to hear them mention the importance of being able to focus on their performance ... or to "get into the zone." Some scientists are studying "the zone," trying to figure out just what it is. And psychologists are working with athletes to try to teach them how to hone their mental edge to improve their performance. Join guest host Joe Palca on this hour of Science Friday for a look at the psychology of winning. Are the brains of the best athletes wired differently?

    Psychology in Sport
by Suzanne Mooney Can psychology help Nasser Hussain and the England cricket team? Today, England's cricket selectors pick the team to face Australia next week in the next test at Trent Bridge. England are two nil down, and need to win this match if they are to have any chance of regaining the Ashes. As well Australia's recent success in the test series, they've also just won the series against the British Lions, and even reached the final of Wimbledon! Do the Aussies have more athletic prowess or is it just in the mind? According to Glenn McGrath, he says international test cricket is very different to county cricket. In fact he says that over 60% of 'talent' is down to mental strength. He is looking forward to the next test because confidence is high in the Australian squad. Sporting psychology is an increasing field. Many sports from football to athletics and basketball all have paid psychologists. The England cricket team had a full time psychologist, but released him in 1999 and followed this up with a series of wins! However the Australians have a very scientific approach to the game. As well as using computer aids, they have a full-time psychologist available to the team at any time.
