Almost no screenshots of the game were released for months, and everyone started to assume that in light of the Dreamcast's shrinking presence in the marketplace, the game would simply be canceled and forgotten. However, the game magically reappeared a few months ago and is now on shelves as a full-priced Dreamcast release. Given the weak competition given by Acclaim's Dave Mirra DC port, Mat Hoffman is easily the best BMX game on the Dreamcast. OK, take the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Change the videotapes you collected to magazine covers, change the skateboards to bikes, alter the game's physics a bit to account for the differences between bikes and boards, and add the manuals from Tony Hawk 2. That pretty much sums up how the game works. The trick system is identical, allowing for lots of different tricks, from barspins to supermans. However, the timing on the tricks is a little different. It takes a little longer to get back on a bike after doing a superman than it would take to straighten out a skateboard for landing, so you must let go of your tricks earlier to give your rider time to remount the bike. Also, the control is much stiffer on the tricks. If you don't tap out your moves in a deliberate fashionhitting the directional

Beyond the nice-looking level textures, the rest of Pro BMX 2 looks pretty good, though the game has a slightly blurry look to it in general. The various costumes are cool and occasionally pretty funny. The riders move very well, and their animation is full of realistic nuances, such as wobbling a bit when you just barely land a trick. The game also has its share of FMV, most of which was shot by Activision during a real-life road trip on which the game's riders drove around, getting into trouble. Each rider has his own collection of clips. Mat Hoffman's seem to focus on how he's constantly wrecking his bike and getting injured. The game mirrors this pretty well, as the crash animations are suitably painful looking. It's too bad the GameCube version of the game displays most of its FMV in a small, blurry window that doesn't seem to quite match the proportions of a standard television, and as a result the videos all look a little too wide. The addition of flatland tricks won't be big news for anyone who's played this sort of game before.

While not a great deal has been added or changed when compared to last year's game, fans of the series will undoubtedly appreciate the new Madden challenges, the tweaked AI, and the new two-minute drill mode. While the options and features in Madden NFL 2001 have obviously been reworked, the actual gameplay and control options on the field haven't changed a bit. On the field, the game is basically a carbon copy of last year's game in terms of presentation and control. The controls are responsive and match up with the game's visuals well. You can control the players on the field with the analog stick or the D-pad. The AI of the computer is a little tougher across the board this year, even on the regular setting. Turning up the difficulty in Madden NFL 2001 is just about asking for a loss, even for experienced Madden players. The cornerbacks play as if their lives depend on it, and only a perfectly placed pass can ensure your receiver will even have a chance of catching the ball. Running the ball is another one of Madden NFL 2001's strong points. Maneuvering your back between the tackles as your offensive line clears a path is extremely fun and easy to do if you catch the defense unprepared.
