Sports Illustrated's "The Greatest Sports Movies"
Ever since part-time boxer Elmo Lincoln became the screen's first Tarzan, in 1918, the movies have been linked with sports, reaching the heights of Olympia and the depths of Space Jam. But which are the best? Our process was democratic and unscientific. We solicited nominations from our staff, then lateraled them back and forth in meetings, in e-mails and around the Goobers dispenser until reaching consensus which, naturally, provoked more debate (With many thanks to MikeE for his assistance!).

Harvey Zucker’s title is out of print and difficult to find for purchase, although it is the most extensive of the sports filmographies. Smoking, drinking, and swearing: The Bad News Bears' cheerful cynicism At a time when sports movies can't be just sports movies anymore—when, as in Cinderella Man and Seabiscuit , they have to be hymns to our national character—it's both startling and soothing to take a second look at Michael Ritchie's Little League comedy The Bad News Bears . A surprise hit when it was released in 1976—and recently remade by Richard Linklater in a version starring Billy Bob Thornton (Paramount, July 22)—the movie is both an antidote to the sentimentality that currently affects sports movies and the last hurrah for the glorious disreputability that characterized the genre in the late '60s and early '70s. For a while there, Americans were happy to ridicule the inspirational syrup that squares love to ladle over sports. The football game in

SIGNONSANDIEGO March 22, 2004 With a new baseball season upon us, it's time to take a few cuts at baseball movies, or, more exactly, the actors in them. Seriously good sports movies are rare, and baseball movies are no exception. We're not here today to rate the movies, other than to assert that "Field of Dreams," "The Natural," "Bull Durham" and "Eight Men Out" are the all-stars in a crowded field of also-rans. Instead, we figured it's time to draw up a fantasy team of celluloid heroes who can hold their own with a bat or a glove.
The good
The best of the bunch stand out like Barry Bonds at a high school tryout. Kevin Costner and Tom Selleck can swing the bat and look convincing. Costner has had a pattern of jump-starting his career with sports movies. Love him ("Dances With Wolves," "Tin Cup") or hate him ("The Bodyguard"), Costner looked great as minor league lifer Crash Davis in "Bull Durham" and was convincing in baseball scenes. Extra points for the great scene with Susan Sarandon at the batting cage where Costner hits with one hand without ever breaking their conversation.

DVD review - Friday Night Lights
21 July 2005 By CAMERON MCMILLAN
Extras: ***
Much like rugby is to New Zealanders, gridiron is treated by Texans as a religion.

Every Friday night towns throughout the state literally stop as thousands head to the stadium to watch their local high school play football. The players are treated like gods, while the head coach deals with the pressure of ensuring the town has a successful team to cheer for (but that's why he gets paid more than the school principal). Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book of the same name by H.G Bissinger, Friday Night Lights follows the 1988 Permian High Panthers as they attempt to win the school's fourth state championship. The film portrays how the team must deal with the pressure bestowed on them by the town, with added pressure on four seniors who have the chance to finish their high school football careers on top.
