June 15, 2005 Lake Buena Vista, Florida
In conjunction with the 40th Anniversary Convention of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the association announced a partnership with Sports Media Challenge, a leading sports media training and consulting firm. NACDA will use technology from Sports Media Challenge to automate the news compilation of the NACDA Daily Review electronic newsletter. The eMonitor technology is a proprietary search engine which proactively monitors, analyzes and provides solutions for reputation management and rumor control. Essentially, it is a brand intelligence management tool that keeps a finger on the pulse of brands, issues, consumer opinions and trends. eMonitor consists of a search tool, which locates news coverage as it becomes available from a variety of offline and online channels including web sites, blogs, fan forums and chat rooms; an analysis tool, which evaluates the coverage based on weighted equations and expert analysis; and a reporting tool, which instantly updates information and provides executives with "At a Glance" reports. The NACDA Daily Review is distributed by NACDA as an independent provider of links to news articles on college sports that have appeared in newspapers or on the web. It is distributed to more than 8,000 administrators as an opt-in member benefit to members of NACDA or one of NACDA's nine affiliate associations.

(Posted 3-10-2005) Call for Papers - The Journal of Sports Media The Journal of Sports Media is a new academic journal that seeks to develop a greater understanding of sports media, in terms of their practice, value and effect on the culture as a whole. JSM is primarily a media research journal and will encourage unique social science using a variety of methodologies, including qualitative, quantitative, and empirical. Submissions are welcome from those who specialize in media platforms, such as print, broadcast, the Internet, public relations and advertising. Research is also encouraged from those who have developed an interest in a specific area of sports media, such as history, law, regulation, economics, ethics and culture. When preparing manuscripts for publication in the journal, authors should follow the guidelines in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.). The first page of the submission should include the title of the paper and the name and affiliation of each author, as well as full contact information for the primary author. The authors name(s) should not appear on the manuscript proper. The second page should include a 75-word abstract. Articles should not exceed 30 manuscript pages, including tables and charts. Manuscripts will not be returned unless the authors request the return by including a self-addressed and stamped envelope.
Manuscripts must not be submitted to another journal at the same time they are under review by JSM.

Boys to Men: Sports Media Messages About Masculinity - 1999
This 16-page companion report analyzes the role that sports figures play in boys' development.
Introduction
Sports programming plays a significant role in the media messages that American boys receive today. According to a recent study conducted by the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles, 98% of U.S. boys ages 8 to 17 consume some form of sports-related media, 82% do so at least a couple of times a week, and 90% watch televised sports. While a full range of American boys watch sports, the effects of their media consumption may differ depending on who they are and what messages are being sent. Do boys of color receive the same messages from these programs that White boys do? Do girls receive the same messages that boys do? What roles do men and women play in the games, on the sidelines or during the commercial breaks? Who are the coaches, the commentators, and the voices of authority on these sports shows? How are violence and aggression presented in sports programming? Above all, how does sports programming affect a boy's sense of self and his potential?

Background
I run the Gay Sports mailing list and have done for about five years. The list used to be insanely active ( 80 posts a month , which ain't bad for an obscure topic), but the times seem to have passed us by. Maybe homosexualism in le monde sportif isn't all that interesting anymore. Even to sportif homosexualists. Nonetheless... Time for a roundup of recent homosexualist sports media sightings, where I define all relevant terms broadly, as is my wont.
Latest sightings

Four years ago, I embarked on a large project to document media coverage of the Paralympics. Here in the year 2000, I haven't lifted a finger to follow what happened to my dear crip friends in Sydney. I corpus of articles on the topic. Joining us late? Herewith, relive the magic of the Gay Sports Media Roundup. We're on the eve of the Olympics, and the mainstream media have come to their quadrennial realization that athletes are sexy First, the obscure stuff. Blue magazine in Australia, an oddball mixture of nude photography, whitespace, and forgettable writing, has published a special issue featuring near-naked photos of Australian athletes . The same was produced for Atlanta. I've seen what these people can do, and it's quite stunning. The problem at present is that this issue has not reached Canada, and there is no locatable Web presence. This of course follows on the heels of the successful Matildas Calendar , a fundraiser for Australian wymmynz soccer. Now, many were the press articles decrying the impropriety of these fine, upstanding ladies' appearing naked, but few were the condemnations of the money crunch that necessitated the calendar in the first place. (Another justification, of course, was promotion.) I own several sexy-Aussie-athlete calendars, of both boys and girls. They've got their heads on straight in Australia, really. They recognize that athletes are the epitome of the developed human form. So do the athletes. Everyone's happy.
