That’s Middle Tennessee University coach Andy McCollum, talking about the talent of 21-year-old Ben Gay , who, some say, could have played in the NFL straight out of high school. But Gay, who rushed for 4,640 yards as a prep in Texas, has played only briefly in junior college and the CFL, and his history since high school is, well, strange. Gay’s last chance may come at the NFL’s July 18 supplemental draft. HOME Rooting For The Owned Team Perhaps no single topic receives more coverage than sports. Nonetheless, media critics tend to ignore this multibillion-dollar media domain because it's seen as entertainment, not journalism. But sports media is not only big business, it's also a potent cultural force, full of with ethical issues. Sportswriters are at the mercy of the teams they cover for continued access to press boxes, locker rooms and post-game interviews, so they have reason to be wary of biting the feeding hand. Worldwide, some sports have become inseparable from the news empires that report on them. Take Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, which owns Fox, Sky and Star networks in North America, Europe and Asia, as well as the Los Angeles Dodgers and stakes in five of England's biggest football clubs. When the media is in bed with the teams it covers, how even-handed can its reporting be? Then there's the belief the public only wants a report of the heroism, the last-minute goal, the record-breaking home run. Those are fine, but where are the discussions of corporate sponsors and tie-ins, international broadcast agreements, union issues, stadium proposals and marketing deals with the media? Don't these have a place on SportsCenter? MediaChannel affiliates offer their perspectives on the challenges for this global industry. In coming weeks, MediaChannel will be taking a close look at coverage of the Sydney Olympics and how the media deals with race and gender in sports.

Not only did he respond, but he told Celizic to run verbatim the email thread that occured between us in his blog and that they would publicize the correction as much as the original article. A big thumbs up to Danny an editor at MSNBC.com for recognizing what happened and using internet media the way it should be used.

Today's sports media executives are inundated with large waves of data which is mostly redundant. Our mandate is to gather all available news and information, analyze it, weed out what is unimportant and package all this information in simple formats, saving our readers valuable time while guiding them to the real story behind the story. PSBMedia distributes information in two ways. First, a daily newsletter, "SportsPipe" is published Monday through Thursday. In July, 2001, "SportsPipe" was born from the merger of two longstanding newsletters, "TV SportsFile" (launched in 1994) and "netSports" (launched in 1999). We also publish annual reports such as the ever-popular "Television Sports Rights" series first published in 1985. Other research reports include "netSports, 2000," and "The Business of Regional Sports." Occasionally, PSB Media publishes other special reports and directories covering related subjects.

    How Media Treats Athletes Unequally
    By Steve Seepersaud
Sports Commentator - Every 2nd Wednesday
Q uestion: What baseball player was arrested for hitting a mascot with a bat? (You can find the answer at the end of this article.) It's a lesson that many are taught in News Writing 101: Reporters are supposed to be impartial. How a journalist feels about a particular subject is not supposed to shine through in his story. This principle sounds fine in theory, but it's not always the practice in sports journalism. Athlete A will often be treated as a hero, while Athlete B is portrayed as a villain, even if both have committed the same misdeed. Negative stories about sports stars attract a lot of attention. That's certainly not an unwelcome result for media outlets. After all, the more people read or watch stories, the more profit is generated for the publication or television network. We'll look at a few examples of how media can treat some athletes like gold and others like garbage.
