The unfortunate portrayal of Indian mascots in sports today takes many forms . 21 This is precisely what sport teams with negative Indian mascots teach
http://www.racismagainstindians.org/STARArticle/PlayingIndian.htm
Playing Indian at Halftime: The Controversy over American Indian Mascots, Logos, and Nicknames in School-related Events By Dr. Cornel Pewewardy Every school year classroom teachers face the reality and challenge of educating diverse children in a multicultural society. Teaching multiculturally requires educators to examine sensitive, diverse topics and cultural issues. It requires looking at historical and contemporary events from a multicultural perspective rather than a monocultural one. Teachers and administrators who are uninformed about cultural diversity, whose knowledge of history and current events is monocultural in scope, and who are unaware of their own prejudices are likely to hinder the academic success and personal development of many students, however unintentional this may be. Multicultural teaching encourages students to investigate institutional racism, classism, and sexism and how societal institutions have served different populations in discriminatory ways. Teachers can help monocultural classes and schools examine their own biases and stereotypes related to different cultural groups. Although one's ethnic group is just one of a number of identity sources available, ethnicity is at the heart of the equity problem in American society. Therefore, discussions about achieving educational excellence require concern about those ethnic groups that have been consistently cut off from equal access to a quality education.

The Deculturalization of Indigenous Mascots in U.S. Sports Culture
by
Cornel D. Pewewardy
Cornel D. Pewewardy is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Teaching and Leadership, School of Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence. His research interests include multicultural education and indigenous populations. This paper appeared in The Educational Forum , Summer 1999, p. 342. During the first three centuries of contact between Indians and whites, the image of the Indian, although confused and fictional, nevertheless had an empirical reference point - the experiences of the people on the frontier who encountered Indians and the correlation between reality and symbol was not difficult. Beginning with the Wild West shows and continuing with contemporary movies, television, and literature, the image of Indians has radically shifted from any reference to living people to a field of urban fantasy in which wish fulfillment replaces reality. -Vine Deloria (1980, ix) Why should educators know about the issues of Indigenous mascots, logos, nicknames, and the tomahawk chop? Invented media images prevent millions of people from understanding the past and current authentic human experience of Indigenous Peoples (Bird 1996). These trappings and seasonal insults offend the intelligence of thousands of Indigenous Peoples in the United States. As educators, we are responsible for teaching as an ethnical practice and for helping to eliminate racism in all aspects of school life. Therefore, the exploitation of Indigenous mascots in U.S. sports culture becomes an issue of educational equity.

113. Changing UTC's Racist Mascot
The story of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga s 1996 sports mascotchange as told in the local media.
http://www.darkfiber.com/utcmascot/
These are a few of the articles that appeared in Chattanooga newspapers - and one in the L.A. Times - regarding local Native American "displeasure" with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's sports mascot, "Chief Moccanooga", that culminated in UTC's decision announced on 3 july 1996 to terminate its use. The story goes further ... the choice of a new mascot - the Mockingbird, and the UTC Basketball team's entry into the NCAA playoffs, but what's covered here are just the press clippings. ... And be advised: there's a lot of disinformation that's been planted by other local interviewees, fed to the press, and assumed to be fact, eg, that i, tom kunesh, was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, that could be considered humorous if this wasn't such a racial issue. Note that Ken LeVon Spears at the Chattanooga Free Press did the best, most objective press coverage of any newspaper, that the Chattanooga Times printed two retractions to Bill Casteel's lies (he's never apologized for them personally), that the SportsTalk guys on local 102.3 TalkFM love their Southern racism, and that the L.A. Times

READ ABOUT THIS BOOK
Brooks Opinion Column May 13, 2002
Use reason to debate community issues.
Solving controversial issues through discussion can benefit the community if the parties engage in reasoned, respectful exchanges. The discussion about the Vallejo High School Apache mascot is a very contentious issue. The mascot-naming problem is one of many similar problems that modern society endures because of America’s legacy of racism. Therefore, the attitudes and the methods that the community adopts to solve this issue will serve as good or bad models for how it addresses other issues of ethnic conflict. The school board has not provided the community with the aggressive leadership it needs to settle this matter reasonably. Members of the community discuss the issue on their own, but often not in a fair manner that will resolve the issue. They use the same words and phrases, but they give them different meanings. They base their arguments on the same American cultural practices, but each side attributes a different significance to them. Some people do not understand the problem within the American cultural context. Maybe they misconstrue definitions to win their point. The basic question at issue is whether the American cultural practice of naming government structures, social institutions and sports mascots follows a protocol. If it does, than the additional question is whether that naming protocol implies different levels of respect for the people whose names society uses for that purpose.

115. US Civil Rights Commission Takes A Stand Against Indian Mascots And Logos
The Commission assumes that when Indian imagery was first adopted for sportsmascots it was not to offend Native Americans. However, the use of the imagery

US Civil Rights Commission takes a stand against
Indian mascots and logos
Note: The following is a statement by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.
The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights calls for an end to the use of Native American images and team names by non-Native schools. The Commission deeply respects the right of all Americans to freedom of expression under the First Amendment and in no way would attempt to prescribe how people can express themselves. However, the Commission believes that the use of Native American images and nicknames in schools is insensitive and should be avoided. In addition, some Native American and civil rights advocates maintain that these mascots may violate anti-discrimination laws. These references, whether mascots and their performances, logos, or names, are disrespectful and offensive to American Indians and others who are offended by such stereotyping. They are particularly inappropriate and insensitive in light of the long history of forced assimilation that American Indian people have endured in this country. Since the civil rights movement of the 1960s many overtly derogatory symbols and images offensive to African-Americans have been eliminated. However, many secondary schools, post-secondary institutions, and a number of professional sports teams continue to use Native American nicknames and imagery.
