    In the beginning....
See more pictures from Lake Wauberg's past...

In 1918, the University YMCA purchased twenty acres of land and water at Lake Wauburg as a recreation center for University of Florida students. This was before the road across Paynes Prairie was completed. The journey to the lake took about a half-day on a winding road of mostly sand with the danger of getting stuck in the sand and mud.
In 1928 Dr. John Tigert became president of the university. The University YMCA dissolved, and the land was deeded to the University of Florida with the understanding that the Union would administer the facility. The Union took over the running of Lake Wauburg (then Camp Wauburg) in 1936, and the transfer of the property to the University of Florida occurred in 1938.
In 1962-63 U. F. Student Government acquired what is currently known as Lake Wauburg South. This is a 72-acre (30.2 acres under water) parcel of land, which the Athletic Association had bought from a private citizen in 1958. The Athletic Association had envisioned it as a retreat facility and an area for team use, but no development of the land occurred.
During the period between the acquisition of Lake Wauburg South and the reopening of the North Park, many ideas were discussed relating to the development of both areas of land. One possibility discussed was the transfer of the North Park to the Department of Natural Resources, and the development of the South Park. The State Division of Parks was to incorporate Lake Wauburg North into its Paynes Prairie project. This transfer never occurred. Stipulations in the court order under which the University acquired the property in 1938 held that the property was for the use of the students of the University of Florida and could not be sold or transferred to any other party.

The History of the Student Recreation Center
- Groundbreaking Ceremony March 2003 - How did it start? UNT students considered a recreation center to be a critical facility on a university campus. In fact, the project was initiated by the Recreation and Leisure Studies Society, a UNT student group, in 1997. The idea gained momentum through student involvement and a referendum was voted on by the students and then passed by the Texas legislature, making the Student Recreation Center a reality. The need for the Student Recreation Center was further documented by a survey of UNT students that showed a need for "a place to be on campus." The survey indicated a critical need for student social and leisure space on campus.

Ex-Socker DaSilva helps in reel-time tale of U.S.' 1950 victory over England
By Glae Thien
SPECIAL TO THE UNION-TRIBUNE April 20, 2005 Nino DaSilva knew that he had big shoes to fill portraying one of the players on the 1950 U.S. national team that achieved one of the biggest upset victories in World Cup soccer history. DaSilva especially remembers stepping into replicas of the awkward footwear of the era, as an actor in "The Game of Their Lives," a movie set to premiere Friday from the creators of "Rudy" and "Hoosiers." In the process, the onetime member of the old San Diego Sockers indoor team walked away with a greater admiration of the players who beat England 1-0 in Brazil for "America's Finest Moment in the World's Greatest Game," as the movie poster proclaims. In a twist for Eric Wynalda, the former U.S. national soccer player says he takes great pride in missing a shot just off the crossbar in a scene from the movie "The Game of Their Lives."

Extreme and action sports
Extreme sports or action sports are sports is a general term for a collection of sports that often feature a combination of speed, height, danger and stunts. The definition of 'extreme sport' is evolving and during the 1970-80's, only sports such as hang gliding have been considered extreme. Today, the definition has evolved to include sports that offer adrenaline rushes as well. Snowboarding, snowblading, skateboarding, kite surfing etc. are classified as extreme or action sports.

http://www.footballresearch.com/
What's New - Articles added on March 5, 2005 Welcome to the Professional Football Researchers Association web site. The PFRA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and, in some cases, reconstructing professional football history. PFRA members receive six issues of our official newsletter-magazine, The Coffin Corner . Each issue is 24 pages crammed with pro football history: articles on great players, teams, and games of the past (and some not-so-great), occasionally a stat article, some opinion, and organization news. We also run series like the "Bulldogs on Sunday" which is about the most complete history of 1920's pro football you'll find. This site contains articles that have appeared in the Coffin Corner over the years, with the exception of the last couple of years. Hey, membership has its privileges. For instance, a recent issue includes articles on the Detroit Lions' Thanksgiving games, the WFL's Chicago Fire, the Ice Bowl and Jim Brown. Next, there’s our Annual – a bonus publication. Years ago, the Annual was used for articles too long for the Corner, but as the magazine grew, the Annual was used for specialized publications like Down Payments, a history of pro football in Akron from 1896 through 1930, a complete summary of the 1923 season. With printing costs soaring, we’ve changed to making special publications available to members by e-mail.
