SPORTS Friday Nights in America DVD
More people attend high school football games than all pro and college games combined. This program takes the fascinating journey to discover why these games remain America's most popular event. The program contains behind-the-scenes footage at Permian High School (the feature film Friday Night Lights is based on this school) in Odessa, Texas, De La Salle High School (they had a 156 game winning streak) in Concord, CA, Pahokee High School ("Muck Bowl") in Florida, Hawkinsville High in rural Georgia and Woodland Hills High, Sto-Rox High and the disappearing town of Braddock in western PA. This program is a "must see" film for anyone who has ever played the game or simply holds a love for the event.
This film captures the powerful historical drama of America's "Steel City," the proud and distinct heritage of western Pennsylvania, and the community's undying love for the game of football.

Vince Young played for the Heisman and LSU played for the state of Louisiana to both pull off Instant Classic victories.
Heisman Heroics
Vince Young easily wrapped up the September player of the month and quite possibly stamped his ticket to New York for the Heisman presentation. Young used his legs and arm to lead the 2nd-ranked Longhorns into the hostile environment of "The Shoe" and pull out the victory over the 6th-ranked Buckeyes . Young's touchdown pass with just over a minute left provided the 25-22 margin of victory that kept Texas' national championship dreams alive. By Vicki Moeser
Smithsonian Office of Public Affairs Sitting in her book-filled office adorned with a Victorian wooden ticket window at the National Museum of American History, Ellen Roney Hughes discusses her belief that all artifacts have meaning, including and perhaps especially sports artifacts. "My research area is in material culture, which is the use of artifacts in the study of history," she explains. Hughes, a cultural historian in the museum's Division of Community Life, oversees a collection of about 3,000 mostly 19th- and 20th-century sports objects, ranging from a backyard badminton set to Arthur Ashe's tennis racket. Included in this collection is an assortment of sports equipment acquired in the late 1800s by George Brown Goode, who worked at the Smithsonian from the early 1870s, first as a volunteer and eventually becoming the director of the U.S. National Museum (now Arts and Industries).

In King Edward's reign of England (1307-1327), laws were passed that threatened imprisonment to anyone caught playing soccer. King Edward's proclamation said:" For as much as there is a great noise in the city caused by hustling over large balls, from which many evils may arise, which God forbid, we command and forbid on behalf of the King, on pain of imprisonment, such game to be used in the city future." Softball originated in Chicago on Thanksgiving Day, 1887. The Legion's involvement in track and field goes back to the 1950's when Ontario Legion Hydro Branch 277 first sponsored the former Canadian Olympic Training Plan. This program went Dominion wide after the 1956 Legion Dominion Convention in Vancouver. By 1957 the Legion was conducting national athletes' clinics with each province being invited to send athletes and coaches.
By 1961 more than 700 athletes had attended these sessions. In 1962 the Canadian Government awarded a grant to sustain the program and this funding continued until 1969. When this support was withdrawn, the track and field program went back to being a provincial level program. In 1975, however, the Legion decided to run a pilot national track and field meet in Waterloo, Ontario. It's extreme success led to the continuation of the program for a 1976 meet in Edmonton, Alberta, since when it has become an annual event and a major program within the Legion. Funding is provided from the Legion's own resources. The nationally sanctioned event which has developed over the years is now divided into two sections - a two-day meet and a two-day clinic for the athletes. These events are attended by more than 330 athletes, 25 coaches and 35 chaperons.
