Sports / Sports history Sports history The first known information about sporting activity in Liechtenstein concerned shooting. Liechtenstein's first shooting ordinance of 1789 is preserved, as well as a membership register from 1802. In addition to these shooting societies, which were likely also engaged in sports, but actually pursued other primary goals, the first sporting activities concerned skiing, gymnastics, cycling, tennis, motor sport, and football. The Princely Hunter Master Josef Negele (Rotenboden) can be considered one of the first skiers, since he was given skis from Tyrol by the Princely Forestry Inspector. As a support, he used the alpenstock in fashion at the time, soap as ski wax, and trouser braces instead of furs as ties. As he skied down the Balischgut for the first time in 1895, the baffled witnesses proclaimed, "The son of the hunter Toni is crazy, he has boards on his feet!" A further pioneer was the artist Friedrich Kaufmann, who skied the Malbun Valley for the first time in 1910, for eight days. Many people regarded him as a "crazy person" or a "useless student". Even before the first actual ski association, the "Liechtenstein Ski Club" founded 1926 in Vaduz, there apparently was a "Samina Ski Club". The Liechtenstein Ski Club, reorganized 1931 in Schaan, joined together with the Triesenberg Ski Club in 1936 to form an association.

25. EDUCATION & SPORTS: History On The Seabed
Illustrated feature from Welcome to Finland on marine archaeology in the Baltic sea.
http://www.publiscan.fi/sc01e-8.htm
History on the Seabed W ater covers more than two-thirds of the surface of our planet. The Baltic with all its bays and inlets is only a small drop in that ocean, but for marine archaeologists and divers it is a fascinating and rewarding place. Systematic exploration of the treasures that it holds is only now beginning as new methods are adopted. Finnish researchers cannot hide their enthusiasm. Most of the oceans are kilometres deep, with some trenches in the Pacific plunging to depths in excess of ten thousand metres. The Baltic, by contrast, has an average depth of only 55 metres. In fact, it is one of the smallest, shallowest, most island-dotted and shoaliest seas in the world. For as long as the seas have been sailed, hundreds of vessels that have strayed off course or lost their battles with storms have ended up at the bottom of the Baltic, especially in its countless bays and inlets. Floor plates believed to have belonged to a Viking ship have been found in the Gulf of Finland. As research methods become more systematic, much more is likely to be uncovered. The Roman historian Tacitus reported nearly two millennia ago that the Germans obtained the furs they valued so highly "from beyond the unknown sea", i.e. the Baltic. The Vikings' eastward expeditions took them through the Gulf of Finland and on to Lake Ladoga. Over the centuries, fierce sea battles have been fought for control of that vital trade artery the Baltic. One indication of its continuing importance is that bristles with air and naval bases. Small wonder, therefore, that the waters of the

Baltimore Colts Johnny Unitas threw for 401 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-31 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. San Francisco Giants hurler Gaylord Perry twirled a no-hitter against the St. Louis Cardinals. Ironically, the Giants were on the other end of a no-hitter by Ray Washburn a day later. Penny Chenery announced that Secretariat would make his inaugural start on the turf in the Oct. 8, Man o' War Stakes at Belmont Park. New York's Dwight Gooden set a major league record for most combined strikeouts in consecutive starts when he duplicated a 16-strikeout performance of five days earlier, giving him 32 over two starts. History of Emerging Sports
NCAA surveys its member institutions' expenditures for women's and men's athletics programs. Study results show undergraduate enrollment is about even (50/50), but male students constitute about 70 percent of the participants in intercollegiate athletics, their programs receive about 70 percent of athletics scholarship funds, 77 percent of operating budgets and 83 percent of recruiting funds. In response to the 1991 survey results, the NCAA Gender-Equity Task Force is established. The final report of the Gender-Equity Task Force is published. The Task Force recommends institutional standards and NCAA regulations to help achieve gender equity. Nine "emerging"sports (five team and four individual sports) are identified. The NCAA principle of gender equity is adopted at the NCAA Convention to create greater participation opportunities. Financial aid legislation and minimum contests and participants required for sports sponsorships applicable to emerging sports programs become effective. Amateurism legislation, seasons of competition legislation and awards and benefits legislation applicable to emerging sports programs become effective.

F OREWORD
This exhibit represents a glimpse into the history of sports and the role the African American played in that arena. Some students had previously requested that such an exhibit should be displayed as a topic of interest and information for the larger audiences of sports enthusiasts. The early history was therefore chosen as the major focus of this exhibit. It was also chosen because it covered the "divided" and later "crossover" era for African Americans who were mostly excluded from the larger sports arena due to their race. On view are seven major sporting events - boxing horse racing cycling track and field ... baseball , and football - which opened the doors to the expanding Sports Arenas of today. Books, photoprints, tapes, replicated sports memorabilia, periodicals, news clips, and lots of historical notes are represented. The life of Michael Jordan: The Making of an Athlete is presented in full view and a special tribute to the late Jackie Robinson is also on view.
