9 sports groups lead
move to oust Buhain

By Marc Anthony Reyes
Inquirer News Service
CITING "lack of wisdom and ability," nine national sports associations (NSAs) have started a drive for the ouster of Eric Buhain as chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission.
The disgruntled officials hope to get the other members from the 36-strong NSA making up the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) to sign a petition addressed to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo seeking the resignation of Buhain from what they say is a "grossly mismanaged" agency.
The complaint against Buhain actually boiled down to "lack of concern and support" for the training of national athletes and the activities of the NSAs. But Buhain, a former bemedalled swimmer, on Monday said the accusations had no basis since the PSC had allotted 80 percent of its overall budget, or roughly 250 million pesos, to the NSAs in 2003 alone. The PSC chief added that of the 100-million-peso financial assistance approved by the board, the agency has already disbursed 85 million pesos. The balance was to be given "subject to the availability of funds."

Sports UPDATED: 08:17, April 06, 2005 Lawmakers ask sports groups for steriod-testing information U.S. lawmakers looking into doping in sports Tuesday sent letters to the heads of the National Basketball Association (NBA), National Hockey League (NHL), Major League Soccer (MLS) and four other organizations asking for information about their drug-testing policies. The House Government Reform Committee sent a similar request to the NFL last week. "This is the compare-and-contrast phase of the investigation," David Marin was quoted by the Associated Press as saying. Marin is the spokesman for committee chairman Tom Davis. During the panel's 11-hour hearing on steroids in Major League Baseball last month, several congressmen threatened government legislation to govern drug testing in MLB and possibly all U.S. sports. The officials were given an April 12 deadline for turning over copies of their sports' current and past drug-testing policies and information about how those were negotiated.
