I'm considering launching a wiki to provide a lexicon for game developers. Backstory: There's been considerable discussion over the years about the need for a shared vocabulary for game design (see here f'rinstance), and its starting to emerge. UT/Austin has a project to develop such a lexicon, but it uses traditional research principles, which strikes me as extraordinarily retroa wiki seems like a much better approach. And there is a game design wiki , but it takes a game design patterns approach, which is too narrowthat is, game design patterns are one useful way of approaching game design, but essentially they're a laundry list of possible game mechanics, rather than a more formal approach to understanding games and game development. As I see it, a proper lexicon should certainly include the vocabulary developed by the game design patterns folks, but that should be only a part of the whole.

The Institutionalization of a Gender Biased Sport Value System Robert B. Everhart, Ph.D. Cynthia Lee A. Pemberton, Ed.D. Historically and traditionally sport has evolved as a male domain, and it is clear that women and girls, as well as men and boys, have different sport participation roots. Introduction Sport has been a part of the "...official school program..." since the mid-1800s, and was originally incorporated into the curriculum to serve as "...an important line of defense..." against the potential feminization of American males by a growing female teaching profession (Sadker & Sadker, 1994, p. 213). As a part of the curriculum, sport provided opportunities for physical fitness and competition, as well as a medium through which valued socio-cultural life skills could be learned and practiced. Grounded in ideals of masculinity, sport, more than any other part of the educational curriculum has been, and continues to be, a gender issue. This paper will explore how school sport has served to institutionalize a gender specific and gender biased sport value system. First the socio-cultural context in which school sport emerged, and its history and evolution will be reviewed. Next the differential impact which school sport has on females and males will be examined. The paper concludes that the development of school sport has, over time, marginalized and devalued women's sport, and the women who participate. It is suggested that because of this, sport participation by women and girls has actually been suppressed.

Native Americans
Western New Mexico has a history rich with Native American culture. During the 12th century, the Anasazi Indians (or "Ancient Ones") established an advanced civilization near Chaco Canyon. With more than 5,000 inhabitants, this site included 40 underground ceremonial kivas and communal living quarters with more than 600 rooms. Then, the Anasazi suddenly disappeared. The mystery has never been solved, but scientists trace the roots of today's pueblo Indians to these ancient Anasazi people. Pueblos
The word "pueblo" refers to an Indian culture that is unique to the Southwest, and not to a particular tribe. New Mexico is home to 19 pueblos, two of which are located near Grants. Though they share many common elements, each pueblo has an independent government, and its own social order and religious practices. The pueblos are further distinguished by their art, jewelry, pottery, drums, carvings and weavings. Indian Tourism
Regional trade fairs, all-Indian rodeos, public dances and feast day celebrations provide perfect opportunities to visit pueblos. Some of western New Mexico's most beautiful landscape is found on Indian lands, and opportunities for unique outdoor recreational experiences abound.

Sports and their metaphoric effect on behavioural paradigms between cultures: a preliminary discussion
"With baseball," I explained to my wife, "the action in the game progresses from base to base, with a concomitant increase in excitement and arousal, both in participants and spectators. Action is clearly divided into distinct stages: first base, second base, third base and home base, and each stage dictates a unique strategy and approach." "Whereas with soccer, the point is getting the ball into the goal as fast as you can," she replied. It shouldn't be surprising that the dominant sport in a culture will supply that culture with certain metaphors and paradigms that affect mores and behavior directly or indirectly. This is clearly the case with the American approach to sex as a graduated activity: from first base (kissing) to second base (fondling) to third base (heavy petting or oral sex) to home base (sexual intercourse). This compartmentalization of various sexual practices in the United States, each granted its own discreet meaning and significance, as well as the paradigm of logical progression from one to the next helps to explain former President Clinton's conviction that he had not "had sex" with Monica Lewinsky since he had only been to third base with her, and the entrenchment of this paradigm at all levels of American society is no where more clearly illustrated than in the recent statement by Texas district attorney Charles A. Rosenthal Jr. in a sodomy case heard by the US Supreme Court

of Ethnic Minorities
China's ethnic minorities have formed their unique cultures in the long process of historical development. China respects and preserves the traditional cultures of ethnic minorities, and all of the minority peoples are free to maintain and develop their own cultures. Respecting the Folkways and Customs of Minority Peoples The various ethnic minority groups in China differ widely in their folkways and customs. They have different modes of production and life styles, as displayed in dress and adornments, diet, residences, marriage, etiquette and funerals. The minority peoples have the right to retain or change their folkways and customs, which are respected by the state. The government protects such rights in every aspect of social life. The forms of burial vary among China's ethnic minorities, including cremation, inhumation, ``water burial'' and ``sky burial'' (exposure burial). The government respects minority peoples' burial customs, and has allotted land for cemeteries and established burial services departments specially for Hui, Uygur and other minority peoples that have the tradition of inhumation. Throughout the country, cemeteries can be found in large, medium and small cities where Hui and other minority peoples preferring inhumation live. The burial custom of Tibetans has also been respected; they can choose whatever form of burial they prefer``sky burial,'' inhumation or ``water burial.''

W ell, the name of this page is "The Peru-Texas Connection." You have already been introduced to a quick look of history, geography and other subjects. Now I am going to describe some similarities and dissimilarities, between the Peruvian culture and the Texan culture. I think that after living over 20 years in Texas and adopted it as my state, and particularly Houston as my new hometown, I have the knowledge to talk about this. However, it is not my intention to comment on which one is good and the other bad. It would be a mistake to make comparisons. All that I want is to examine and describe with the only purpose that this may help somebody to better understand both of these cultures. Whether a Peruvian goes to Texas or a Texan goes to Peru, this person is going to be exposed to one of these two cultures. The more that you know about it the easier for you to understand the other culture, and to accept it.

    SLC Research
In the 2000/2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) SLC received a rating of 4, based upon the submission of 100% of its staff. This means that the area's research demonstrated: National excellence in virtually all of the research activity submitted with some of international excellence This placed us as the highest ranked social science dominated submission in England. Since then SLC has been joined by Dr Dan Burdsey Dr Jayne Caudwell Paul Gilchrist Dr David Howe ... Prof Steve Redhead and Dr Belinda Wheaton , strengthening its profile in critical policy studies, sport media, the politics of leisure and sport, ethnographic research, and the cultural analysis of gender identity. This consolidation and expansion of the group's expertise has confirmed the impact and status of SLC as one of the leading multi-disciplinary social science-based groups in the international community of sport and leisure studies, confirmed in research collaborations and associations with comparable groups and individual scholars in UK universities (Cambridge, De Montfort, Loughborough, Stirling, Surrey) and beyond (Barcelona, Montpellier, Montreal, Perth, Texas (Austin), Toronto). The SLC area has also recently been joined by Visiting Professors, Lincoln Allison and Jennifer Hargreaves and Faculty Fellows, Mike Marqusee and Jack Wilkinson. Staff members have published extensively in major monographs and collections and in leading international journals. Recent monographs include: Power Games: a critical sociology of sport (edited by Sugden, J and Tomlinson, A), which included contributions from most members of SLC; 'Race', sport and British society (edited by Carrington, B and McDonald, I); Sport, rules and values: philosophical investigations into the nature of sport (McFee, G); Sport, professionalism and pain: ethnographies of injury and risk (Howe, P D); Understanding Lifestyle Sport (Wheaton, B); The Global Politics of Sport (Allison); and
