Sports as Social Studies Part 3: History and Cultures
  • History : Every sport has a history of some sort. Passionate fans remember lots of their favorite sport's history. Baseball especially has a long history, full of amazing feats and a whole lot of numbers. Many people can remember the last time the Dallas Cowboys won the Super Bowl (1996) a lot better than they can when the Constitution came into being (1781). Cultures : Sports often reflect the culture of the countries in which they are played. Countries like Kenya, with their wide open spaces and their culture that emphasizes walking and running, produce excellent long-distance runners, moreso than any other country. Archaeology : We can even find sports in archaeology. An example of this is archaeological evidence of the ancient ball games that the Mayas played in which they tried to throw a ball through a ring. Sound familiar? We now call something just like it basketball.
In many ways, sports define a society. They show what people are interested in watching other people do and what they will pay to see. They show how people can make a living by being athletic and entertaining other people. They give people ways to test their athletic skill against other people. Most of all, they give people something to focus on and follow that is a sort of release from the weighty cares of everyday life.

Joe, the blues, "The Simpsons," Michael Jackson, the Dallas Cowboys, Gone With the Wind , the Dream Team, Indiana Jones, Catch-22 these names, genres, and phrases from American sports and entertainment have joined more tangible American products in traveling the globe. For better or worse, many nations now have two cultures: their indigenous one and one consisting of the sports, movies, television programs, and music whose energy and broad-based appeal are identifiably American. This chapter concentrates on a few of America's original contributions to world entertainment: the sports of baseball and basketball; movies; and three kinds of popular music jazz, rock and roll, and country.
BASEBALL The sport that evokes more nostalgia among Americans than any other is baseball. So many people play the game as children (or play its close relative, softball) that it has become known as "the national pastime." It is also a democratic game. Unlike football and basketball, baseball can be played well by people of average height and weight. Baseball originated before the American Civil War (1861-1865) as rounders, a humble game played on sandlots. Early champions of the game fine-tuned it to include the kind of skills and mental judgment that made cricket respectable in England. In particular, scoring and record-keeping gave baseball gravity. "Today," notes John Thorn in

Office Hours: M/W, 2-3PM polk@arts.ucla.edu Course Description:
The study of sports can provide an important space in which to think critically about human beliefs and behaviors. In this course, emphasis will be placed on identifying and interpreting the significance of sports and athletics as culturally and socially informed activities. It is assumed that the careful analysis of athletic events, whether they be NFL football games, Mexican professional wrestling extravaganzas, or Brazilian soccer matches, will provide meaningful insights into the worldviews and value systems of the societies in which these behaviors take place. More specifically, analysis can reveal, among other things, culturally derived understandings of the body, ideals of physical beauty and prowess, concepts of racial ability (both mental and physical), notions of gender-appropriate behavior, and critical aspects of group (local, national, ethnic, etc.) identity formation. Course Requirements: This course will be run as an undergraduate seminar. There will be regular lectures on primary topics and concepts; however, a significant amount of class time will also be devoted to discussion. Attendance and participation is required. Students are expected to complete the assigned readings by the date indicated and to attend lectures prepared to discuss them. Students are encouraged seek out information related to daily topics and present the data to the class for discussion. Grading will be based on class participation (10%), final exam (30%), an analytical film review (25%), and a field report (35%).

Training in this field is generally done within an informal framework in a more and more important and popular way in numerous countries.
In the Declaration of Punta del Este, adopted by the third International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials in charge of Physical Education and Sport (MINEPS III), held in December 1999, ministers emphasized the preservation and the appraisal of traditional and indigenous sports from different regional and national cultural heritages, including the establishment of a World Heritage List of Traditional Games and Sports.
Moreover, traditional games and sports reflect on different cultural expressions, and create a bridge between cultures for a better mutual comprehension.
We must continue to preserve and encourage Traditional Games and Sports, cultural heritage of humanity, guarantee of enrichment for societies, memories of civilizations.
On the occasion of MINEPS III, held in Punta del Este, Uruguay, in 1999, the international community proposed that a significative action from UNESCO could be initiated within the framework for the promotion and preservation of traditional games and sports.
