The New Physical Education by Robert Rickover The first part of the program described one important aspect of the New PE: fewer competitive activities (dodge ball was cited as a prime example) and more activities that emphasize personal achievement such as rock-climbing, kick-boxing and tai-chi. So far so good, I thought. While rock-climbing and kick-boxing probably would not have appealed to me, I think I would have enjoyed tai-chi, and probably benefited a great deal from it. But then, in the second part of the program, the whole question of evaluation and measurement was introduced. How are kids in the New PE programs to be graded? One approach, already in use in one Seattle school, involved attaching tiny heart rate monitors to the children during class. Then, when the class was over, the teacher could check the read outs and determine just how much effort each child had made, and grade accordingly. So much for minimizing strategies of the sort I had perfected!

Are you aware that by the first day of the 2006-07 school year all US school districts that receive federal funding for their meal programs - pretty much every district - must enact a wellness policy ? This requirement was signed into law by President Bush on June 30, 2004, as part of the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act. By participating in the formulation of these policies, American physical educators have a rare opportunity to impact school district attitudes towards children's physical activity and nutrition. First, it's important to understand that federal mandates - especially unfunded ones - are almost always unpopular with local school boards. According to the US Constitution, public education is a local (state) responsibility and school boards do not like "outside" interference.

Unfortunately, students with disabilities often have limited opportunities in school athletics. The adapted section this month provides readers with information about a variety of disability sport opportunities that students can participate in when athletic programs are not available at their school. The disability sport opportunities listed here are not meant to be exhaustive, but are meant to provide just a glimpse into possible opportunities. An excellent base of ideas is provided for adapted physical education teachers, adapted physical activity professors, and for parents who's kid(s) have disabilities, to see how they might get involved with disability sports in their local area. If the opportunities described here do not fit your specific needs, feel free to contact any of the listed organizations for more information on disability sports in your area.
