Philosophy 1 - Sport of War What is wrestling? This may sound like a simple question with a simple answer but like most things in life, the more one learns, the harder the answers become. After spending four years talking to people about what wrestling should be, I have come to realize while everybody has their opinion on how to fix some aspect of our sport, most people have not thought through completely the basic question of what wrestling is and what it should be. Since we have not clearly defined our foundation, we then end up with different conclusions and struggle to bring about change. When change occurs, it is not always for the best and many people grumble about how illogical the changes are. Let me clearly define what we here at RealProWrestling feel is the philosophical foundation for wrestling. First, we believe the sport of wrestling is based on unarmed hand-to-hand combat with some method of winning substituted in place of fighting to the death. We also see the logic in restricting various attacks, such as striking, to try to prevent injuries. This creates a sport that is as close to hand-to-hand single combat as possible, yet safe. Other martial arts explore the use of weapons, striking, submissions, or are designed for situations other than one-on-one combat. Some are designed not as sport and the safety of the participants is not a factor. One discipline is not better than another just like one tool is not better than another tool in a tool box. There is a time for a hammer and there is a time for the screwdriver. A good craftsman has all the tools and uses the right one for the job. So to with the tool box of the martial arts. Wrestling is just one of those tools. It also happens to be one of the dominant tools in that tool box.
