The Olympic Games
In the ancient times, four great game festivals were held on Greek land: The Isthmians, The Nemeans, The Pythians and The Olympic Games. Part of a religious festival, the Olympic Games were held every four years at Olympia. The four year interval was called an Olympiad , and was the system upon which time in ancient Greek history was calculated. The games were so important that even wars were stopped at the time they were held. The first Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C. At first, only one race (the sprint) was run. Later, the discus and javelin throw, broad jumping and wrestling were added. The Olympic Games were held for more than 1,000 years. They were abolished by the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius in 394 A.D. The Games were revived in 1896 to promote understanding and friendship among nations. The first modern games were held in Athens, Greece. Young men and women come from all over the world to compete in various sports and represent their country. They live in an Olympic Village at the site of the games. The Olympic Games are organized and governed by the International Olympic Commitee (IOC). It sets the general program, chooses the city where the games are to be held, and determines the standards of amateurism. Each participating country has a National Olympic Commitee that is responsible for arranging the participation of the nation's athletes in the games.

The Other Side Of The Olympic Games
By Mark Simmons
Sports Commentator - Every 2nd Wednesday
Once again, four years have passed and the world is ready for another global reconciliation that we call the Olympics this time Summer Olympics. At the turn of the millennium, Sydney will be host to the 27th Summer Olympic Games. But like in any edition of this gigantic celebration of sports, money and finance always play an important role in the equation. Whether it has to with ticket sales, sponsors, advertisers or the just plain deal-with-it things that come along.
As the opening day for the Olympics on Sept. 15th is quickly upon us, ticket sales are not doing as well as anticipated. The first day of over-the-counter ticket sales did not live up to its reputation of generating a large turnover last Friday, June 16th. To spruce up the event, organizers put more than 440,000 Olympic Games tickets on sale for baseball, sailing, boxing, diving, and gymnastics, to name a few. The Sydney organizers were counting on a heavy turnout for the opening of the walk-by first box office recently where avid sports fans can step right up to the counter and purchase Olympic tickets. Only about a dozen individuals, however, actually waited in line to be the first ones to get their hands on tickets.

The Olympic Games:
Summer 2004 in Athens, Greece

Athens, Greece, will host the 2004 Summer Olympics. For information on Greece, click here . For a page on Greece's flag, click here The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad are being held in Athens, Greece. The opening ceremonies are on August 13, 2004. The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.
