Drugs in Sports Report
CBC has posted on its website a great in-depth report on performance-enhancing drugs in sports . The site includes a timeline of steroid cases through history to the present. Largely they focus in on drugs at the Olympic Games but major professional leagues - the NFL, NHL, MLB and NBA - aren't forgotten in the coverage. Of particular note is a lengthy interview with Dick Pound , the head of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), about his ongoing campaign to clean up sports and to establish an universal code of standards across amateur and professional sports organizations. Some excerpts: I don't want my grandchildren to have to become chemical stockpiles in order to be good at sports and to have fun at it. Baseball, take your kid out to the ballpark some day and you say, 'Son, some day if you ingest enough of this shit, you might be a player on that field, too.' It's a completely antithetical view to what sport should have been in the first place. It's essentially a humanistic endeavour to see how far you can go on your own talent. ...I think one of the answers is that there is an inordinate influence on the public and young people coming from professional sports. These are the farm teams for all of these professional undertakings. Basically, if you're saying to some kid in grade 10, 'If you don't weigh 265 pounds by the time you're a freshman in college, don't bother.' That's wrong. I mean, what kind of message is that?

Published: Journal of Analytical Toxicology, Screening Procedure for b -Adrenergic Drugs in Sports Drug Testing by Immunological Methods
R. Ventura, G. González, M.T. Smeyers, R. de la Torre, and J. Segura A systematic study of the cross-reactivities of b -adrenergic agonists and antagonists and their metabolites with an ELISA test designed to detect terbutaline and other b -agonists has been performed in order to evaluate the applicability of this immunological test as screening method in routine human sports drug testing. Concentration response curves were calculated. IC values from 1.7 to 21.5 ng/mL were obtained for b -agonists, and values from 3.1 to 520.8 ng/mL were obtained for most of the b -blockers. The highest cross-reactivity was mainly depending on the amino substituent of the molecules although the structure of the aromatic ring was also important. Minor changes in the aromatic ring, such as 4-hydroxylation for propranolol, did not largely influence the IC value. Distribution of control activities (percentage of optical density as compared with a blank sample) of urines obtained in controlled excretion studies (70 samples) and urines collected after competition in sports in which b -blockers are recommended to be tested (147 samples) showed a very small overlapping between the subpopulations of positive and negative samples. Cutoff values of 45 or 60% control activity were proposed for routine analysis. Sensitivity and specificity values of 92.8 and 98.8%, respectively (cutoff 45%), or 98.2 and 95.0%, respectively (cutoff 60%), were obtained. Because the known prevalence of positive results of

BellaOnline's Cycling Editor Drugs in Sports As the topic of performance enhancement drugs continues to dominate the news both in the US and Europe, I can’t help but feel a growing resentment that sports that I have loved for years are being tainted by the very individuals who are the sport. I know that we all revel in the ‘sports moment’, when something extraordinary happens in an event. I think though that what makes it ‘extraordinary’ for fans is that we place ourselves in the athletes shoes and wonder what it would be like, for just one moment, to feel what they feel. When our trust that the average person can’t put themselves in those shoes and can’t experience the feeling, however remotely, then the sport begins to become important only to those who are in it.

Drug Czar Slammed for 'Silence' Against Drugs in Sports by Former Office Spokesman
From: Bob Weiner or Colin Miller, 301-283-0821 or 202-329-1700 WASHINGTON, July 13 U.S. Drug Czar John Walters is being slammed for "silence" in the fight against drugs in sports by former office spokesman Bob Weiner. "The Drug Czar's silence is not golden it tarnishes sports," said Weiner, who wrote an oped in today's New York Post together with Colin Miller, a junior at Johns Hopkins University and vice-president of the men's Rugby team. Weiner was director of public affairs for the White House National Drug Policy Office 1995-2001. Weiner and Miller assert that despite a growing "sad list of athletes, famous and average, caught using drugs", including former Oakland A's slugger Jose Conseco now admitting he was a 'steroid addict', and 'over a half million high school students who used steroids last year', one voice that has been unusually quiet on the issue of drugs in sports is the Office of National Drug Control Policy and the Drug Czar, John Walters." Weiner and Miller point out that, "Unlike his predecessor, four-star Gen. Barry McCaffrey, Walters has taken a passive position; he has not put together one national news conference on sports drug policy and he has been sending well-meaning but lesser surrogates to international conferences instead of personally appearing."

More On Stimulant Drugs In Sports By Dzulkifli Abdul Razak APART FROM AMPHETAMINES AND other realtes substances, there are many other drugs that are used in sports that could produce similar effects. Although they are classed differently in medical usage, they are nevertheless doping agents and thus banned in international sporting events. Below are some of the more common substances being misused. Ephedrine Just a few hours before the opening ceremony of the 26th Olympics, there was a report about a Norwegain canoeist who failed a drug test for ephedrine, another type of stimulant, at a competition in the German City of Duisburg in June. Consequently, he was dropped from the four-man kayak team and banned from competing in Atlanta. The canoeist, Peter Ribe was a bronze medalist at the 1993 world championships in the double kayak (K-2). He claimed that he had taken a herbal product that was a subsequently found to contain the substance. In May, another athlete, a high jumper from Italy, Antonella Bevilacqua, was also in danger of being ruled out of the Olympics after testing positive for the drug. In both cases, it was alleges that the positive tests were due to the use of Chinese traditional preparations. Ephedrine belongs to a class of drugs called sympathomimetics. Examples of such drugs include etafedrine, methylephedrine and methoxyphenamine. Ephedrine can also be found in many plant sources, especially those of the Ephedra species which is widely used in traditional medical preparations.

E-drug: Use of drugs in sports (cont'd)
Dear E-Druggers,
As a member of the Technical Committee of the Bolivian Federation of
Ski and Andean Sports, I'm worried about use of epoietin as a drug in
sports, since its effect is rather similar to the effect of training in
highland cities like La Paz-Bolivia. The banning of use of epoietin is
good, as are all efforts to ban use of drugs in sports. However,
disqualifying athletes with high levels of hemoglobin should be further
discussed because such decisions may affect athletes from countries
like Nepal, Bolivia and Peru. They may be disqualified not because they took a forbidden drug, but because of a natural condition of the environment they live in. The high levels of hemoglobin in highland athletes is compensated by liquid retention that prohibits to perform at the levels they are used to in their home lands. Some other drugs forbidden in sports are being discussed now since the recent disqualification of a canadian snowboarder who won the gold medal at Nagano's Winter Olympic Games. I've seen many athletes
