Introducing First-Year Student-Athletes to the Library:
The Michigan State University Experience Michael Lorenzen and Nancy Lucas Literature Review
A great deal of literature deals with students-athletes in higher education. This paper will focus on those studies that establish the student-athlete as a special population on campus that is treated differently than other student populations. In particular, the negative stereotyping of athletes has resulted in widespread bias that poses difficulties for the student-athlete in receiving an education. It will also examine the efforts of academic librarians to reach the student-athlete population and make libraries more accessible to them. The negative views of faculty in particular can harm student-athletes. One study (Leach and Conners 1984) indicated that faculty held more negative attitudes toward student-athletes than do other students, administrators, and alumni. Leach and Conners postulated that faculty perceive that athletics is incompatible with the basic values of academic integrity and academic excellence. A more recent study (Engstrom, Sedlacek, and McEwen 1995) confirmed that faculty do view student-athletes (particularly those in revenue producing sports) less favorably than they do other students. For example, faculty perceived more favorably students who were not involved with athletics getting a scholarship, driving an expensive car, being mentioned in the campus paper, or even receiving a good grade in their class.

The Benefits of Sports Conditioning
Julie Odler, Associate Coach
JDS Sportcoaching, LLC
One of the most common misconceptions among athletes is that they can get in shape and continue to improve physically simply by participating in their sport. Many athletes are convinced that they are either too old, too young, or not elite enough to benefit from a coach or a sports conditioning program. This is nothing but a myth! The truth is that anyone, at any level, can benefit from such a program. The higher level of performance desired, the more efficiently and consistently one wishes to perform, (competitively or not) and the more potential that exists for injury (due to either training volume or the inherent danger of the sport itself) the more important it becomes to design a specific sports conditioning program tailored to the athlete and his or her specific sport or event.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries in Female Athletes: Why Are Women More Susceptible?
James L. Moeller, MD; Mary M. Lamb, MD
THE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE - VOL 25 - NO. 4 - APRIL 97 In Brief: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries occur most frequently in planting and cutting sports such as basketball, soccer, and volleyball. National Collegiate Athletic Association injury data show that female athletes injure the ACL more frequently than their male counterparts do. The greater incidence of ACL injuries in women probably stems from complex, interrelated factors, possibly including hamstring-quadriceps strength imbalances, joint laxity, and the use of ankle braces. Successful treatment often includes surgery. T he number of girls and women participating in all levels of sports has risen greatly in recent years, and the way they play has changed, too. Women's sports, once dominated by a slow, defensive style, are now played with speed, precision, and power. But with these changes have come increased injuries, and female athletes have higher injury rates than men in many sports, particularly basketball, alpine skiing, volleyball, and apparatus gymnastics (1,2). One of the more common injuries in women is to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Though the popular press has only recently piqued public interest in ACL injuries (

How Effective Are Multiple Set, ‘Hypertrophic’ Protocols? A Review of One Study
Updated: Thursday, 25-Aug-2005 17:21:39 EDT The new American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription recommend simple, low-volume, time-efficient resistance training protocols for all trainees, regardless of training experience. These new guidelines are in stark contrast to the complex, multi-set, high-volume, time-consuming periodization protocols formerly recommended in the ACSM’s 2002 position stand on resistance training The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) continues to endorse complex, high-volume training protocols that are similar to the outdated ACSM Guidelines. Further, the NSCA claims that the stimulus required for experienced trainees is different (i.e., variable loading, inter-set rest time, and volume) from the stimulus required for novice trainees. A critical analysis suggests that the outcomes are about the same regardless of the training protocol one uses.

    Stress Fractures in Female Athletes
Stress fractures have two primary causes. They result from excessive bone strain resulting in microdamage to the bone coupled with an inability to keep up with appropriate repair of the bone, or a depressed response to normal strain at the cellular and molecular levels where bone remodeling occurs. The former occurs most often in otherwise healthy female athletes and military recruits, while the latter is likely to occur with other physical problems, such as osteoporosis. There were 2.4 million high school girls competing in sports in 1997, an 800% increase over 1971. And stress fractures occur more often in female athletes than male athletes. The risk of stress fractures in female recruits in the US military is up to 10 times higher than men undergoing the same training program. There are many contributing factors to the greater frequency of stress fractures in women. Male athletes may have greater muscle mass, which absorbs shock better. In a study of female athletes, decreased calf girth was a predictor of stress fractures of the tibia. The larger width of male bones may also absorb shock better.

    Creatine Supplementation in Athletes: Review
    by Mark A. Jenkins, MD
If you haven't yet heard of creatine supplementation you soon will. It is being promoted as a muscular performance enhancer, and there is scientific evidence to support this. Unfortunately, claims have escalated beyond science, and now athletes from a wide variety of sports have begun taking this substance. The pursuit of performance enhancing potions has historically been like the alchemists dreams turning lead into gold. Too often the latest fad turns out to do nothing or is harmful. Although creatine supplementation offers short-term limited benefits, whether or not it is harmful long term has yet to be fully determined.
    Physiology of creatine in exercise
The key to understanding creatine supplementation is to appreciate that it only helps with certain activities. A basic review of what creatine is, and how it is used in the body will help you understand how supplementation might be beneficial. First, the basics. Muscle cells generate mechanical work from an energy liberating chemical reaction ATP is split into ADP and P (phosphate). ATP can be used by muscle cells very quickly, but there is only an extremely limited supply usually only enough for a few seconds of high intensity work. When the ATP is gone, work stops. Fortunately, the body has several ways to convert ADP back to ATP. The fastest method is to move the phosphate group off of phosphocreatine and onto ADP. This yields ATP which is immediately available for muscular work and creatine. There is enough phosphocreatine to keep ATP levels up for several more seconds. So at this point we've moved from 2 - 3 seconds of all-out work (ATP) to almost 10 seconds (ATP + creatine). The body can recharge creatine back to phosphocreatine, but this takes time (approximately 30 - 60 seconds). This ATP + creatine system makes up the fastest component of the anaerobic system, and is most used by power athletes. A good example is trench warfare in football (i.e., 6 seconds of all out force, followed by 45 seconds of standing around).
