http://www.mirror-mirror.org/athlete.htm
Eating disorders continue to be on the rise among athletes, especially those involved in sports that place great emphasis on the athlete to be thin. Sports such as gymnastics, figure skating, dancing and synchronized swimming have a higher percentage of athletes with eating disorders, than sports such as basketball, skiing and volleyball. According to a 1992 American College of Sports Medicine study, eating disorders affected 62 percent of females in sports like figure skating and gymnastics. Famous gymnasts Kathy Johnson, Nadia Comaneci and Cathy Rigby have come forward and admitted to fighting eating disorders. Cathy Rigby, a 1972 Olympian, battled anorexia and bulimia for 12 years. She went into cardiac arrest on two occasions as a result of it. Many female athletes fall victim to eating disorders in a desperate attempt to be thin in order to please coaches and judges. Many coaches are guilty of pressuring these athletes to be thin by criticizing them or making reference to their weight. Those comments could cause an athlete to resort to dangerous methods of weight control and can do serious emotional damage to the athlete. In sports where the athletes are judged by technical and artistic merit, they are under enormous pressure to be thin, because many of the judges consider thinness to be an important factor when deciding the artistic score. In 1988, at a meet in Budapest, a US judge told Christy Henrich, one of the world's top gymnasts, that she was too fat and needed to lose weight if she hoped to make the Olympic squad. Christy resorted to anorexia and bulimia as a way to control her weight, and her eating disorders eventually took her life. At one point her weight had plummeted as low as 47 lbs. On July 26, 1994, at the age of 22, Christy Henrich died of multiple organ failure.

http://ar.geocities.com/animeymanga1/ba.html

AAP outlines medical concerns for female athletes
An updated policy from the American Academy of Pediatrics stresses that while exercise is important and should be promoted in girls for health and enjoyment, pediatricians should be aware of health problems that may occur in female athletes. The policy covers important health issues that impact female athletes including disordered eating, menstrual dysfunction and decreased bone mineral density (osteoporosis). The original AAP statement on female athletes only addressed menstrual dysfunction, also called "amenorrhea." Coming to terms
Connecticut basketball star Shea Ralph struggled with anorexia nervosa, which depleted her to the point that she needed help getting out of bed. After a knee injury in 1997, Ralph said, she was afraid she would gain weight. "I flipped," Ralph said in Sunday's Hartford Courant. "And I just didn't eat." Exercise excess? Experts say there can be too much of a good thing
Jessica Weiner’s exercise routine was unlike that of most 14-year-olds, an age when many girls drift away from exercise. Weiner spent four to six hours every day working out. She devoted the wee hours of the morning to the gym, returning after school to take a turn on every exercise machine. “Bike, treadmill, stair machine, weights — you name it, I did it,” she says. Women aim to be Ms. Fitness

Check out Sports Illustrated For Kids' coverage of the Summer Olympics in Athens! Olympic fever has taken over the city of Athens. More than 10,000 athletes are ready to compete in Athens, the capital of Greece and host to the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Tens of thousands of tickets have been sold daily for the past few days. Olympic History
In ancient times, the Games were based on Greek myths. They were celebrated every four years with sports competitions and a religious festival that honored Greek gods. The competitions began with short foot races and grew to include longer-distance running, jumping and discus throwing.
People watch as the Olympic torch passes across new Rio-Antirion bridge, which links the south Peloponnese region to mainland Greece. About 300 athletes from 13 countries participated in this first modern Olympics in Athens. The Games were a huge success and for the next 100 years, the Olympics traveled to countries all over the world, promoting competition, peace and unity.
