Gay athletes and events in the 20th century are few: Bill Tilden , who does not hide his homosexuality, wins the men's singles title at Wimbledon. He goes on to win two more Wimbledon titles, seven U.S. championships, and leads U.S. teams to seven Davis Cup victories. In 1950, a survey of sportswriters names Tilden the greatest tennis player of the half-century. He dies in 1953. Tom Waddell , a 30-year-old Army physician, places sixth in the Olympic decathlon. Waddell, who is openly gay, becomes increasingly involved in gay politics. In 1976, Waddell and his partner Charles Deaton are the first gay men to be featured in the "Couples" section of People magazine. Five years later, Waddell forms San Francisco Arts and Athletics to plan the first "Gay Olympic Games." David Kopay , an NFL running back who played for five teams (San Francisco, Detroit, Washington, New Orleans, Green Bay) between 1964-72, becomes the first professional team-sport athlete to come out doing so three years after retiring. He admits his homosexuality during an interview with the now-defunct

Directory of Sports Organizations for Athletes with Disabilities
Created by: Steven E. Mayer, MD Forward Sports competitions for athletes with disabilities have blossomed over the past 35 years. These athletes have special requirements that only physiatrists can address. Unfortunately, most of these athletes are not being followed by physiatrists, and no system exists for engaging qualified physiatrists for this purpose. This directory takes the first step by providing a nationwide listing of organizations to help local physiatrists become involved with sporting events for athletes with disabilities. The organizations listed herein will provide information about classification systems and local participation guidelines. This directory contains information on the following topics: (a) (b) (c-d) (e-h) ... To next page of directory Submissions lsands@aapmr.org

Welcome... to my unofficial site. I received a liver transplant in March 1994 at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinic. I invite you to read my story at Dick A. Hawkins Liver Transplant which also features my wife's story as my best friend and frequent care-giver. Since the surgery, I've been involved in the transplant community, trying to give back to those with whom I share this experience. For 2-1/2 years I was the editor/writer of "TROM Topics," the quarterly newsletter for Transplant Recipients Organization of Minnesota . Just 4-1/2 months after transplant, I participated in the 1994 U.S. Transplant Games and was hooked! As of 1995, more than 450,000 people in the world had received organ transplants. Yet less than 2,000 attend the U.S. and World Transplant Games. These are Olympic-style games for recipients of solid organ or bone marrow transplants. They are an expression of athletic ability and, more important, an effort to improve organ donation throughout the world. With more than 67,000 Americans on the waiting list, we need to bring this to the attention of the public. The Games provide publicity to help encourage donation. In the USA, National Kidney Foundation sponsors the U.S. Transplant Games in even numbered years. The Games events are separated by gender and age groups. They feature opening ceremonies, athletic events, workshops, and closing ceremonies. We honor the donor families who make everything possible. We pack a lot into the four days. Most of us develop friendships that last a lifetime.
